THUNDERSHIRT for Dogs..Deal or Dud?

Anyone had experience with the Thundershirts. My friend has three poodles, one of which goes bonkers during thunderstorms. She bought Michelle one and swore it helped her stop shaking and panting. When I visited her recently I got to see it in action for myself. It did seem to lessen the effects of the storm for her quite a bit. She gifted me with one for Ohno and I have tried it out a few times with good success.

Last night we had storms roll in about 1:00 am and he was pacing and panting. I put the Thundershirt on him and he layed between us in the bed and went to sleep. Right now it is thundering again, and Ohno has his shirt on. He is standing close to my legs, but not shaking and running for the confinement of the bathroom.

I have to say for Ohno, this is a deal. Rooney also has some anxiety and a Thundershirt is on the way for him.

Cats I don't know about.

Thundershirt? ... I must investigate .. I really need to know more about this .... it's all new to me.
Boy, I could use something like this for my two dogs.

Is it all nylon? Does it make them hot? I had never heard of these before, and if it is helpful for fireworks too, double good.

A gal who has a Norwich Terrier who's really fearful in thunderstorms, reported that although it wasn't a miracle cure, it did lessen the dogs fearful reaction to the loud thunder, so she thought it was beneficial to use. My guy is also stressed during thunder or fireworks, but his reaction is not extreme. He doesn't like to go out into the yard, but if he can be my shadow in the house until the storm subsides...he's okay with that. :love_heart:

Boo's Mom..the shirt is a stretchy cotton nylon blend, kind of like spandex. It is supposed to fit snugly, so it has a flap overlay with velcro strips for adjustment. It doesn't seem to make Ohno hot, but we are in air conditioning. He slept in the bed between us last night with it on and didn't wake up panting...(Phil and TG, just ignore the part about waking up panting, I know your itching to comment :playful:lol) Either he sleeps with us during a storm or no one sleeps!

I have an update on the effectiveness of the Thunder Shirt. We have had storms daily for the past week and the Thunder Shirt has gotten a review worthy workout.

For my Ohno, it works great. We had a full blown knock down, drag out thunder and lightening storm Wednesday night that made me want Phil's "Thunder Shirt'...'LOL. I was just getting out of the shower when Ohno came in the bathroom to shake and cower in his usual spot. I knew he had heard the thunder off in a distance before I did, so I got his shirt and put it on him. I put him in the bed between us and he calmed right down, stopped shaking and was very relaxed. Normally, he would be panting and squirming, getting up and down. He has worn it so many time this week, that I think he now has made the connection that it is comforting for him during the storm.

I have one on the way for Rooney, who is also phobic, but not as bad as Ohno. It will be interesting to see if it works as well for him.

Thanks for the update OG ... sounds like they do a good job.
I probably will get them, but first I need to do a rain dance!

They should make these for people...I've always gotten extremely nervous during bad storms. I've read it's due to atmospheric pressure changes, or more ozone in the air. Wonder if that's why animals get uneasy?? I've seen it with some of our cats, and don't think it's the thunder so much as just that they get uneasy.

Happy that it worked so well, O-Gal!

Pappy, they only let me keep mine after I promised that next time I'd use the institution across town ... their loss. I was instrumental in creating such client favorites as Indoor Apple Picking and Spittle Finger-Painting. :eek:nthego:

I put it down to air pressure. As my built in barometer registered pressure drops my tolerance levels fell accordingly. I'd start getting cranky hours before a storm appeared to the point of throwing stuff. Age has cured that, couldn't give a toss now and hardly notice there's one around until it's coming in the windows.
