Today Starts The Holy Month of Ramadan

At one time long; long ago Muslims and Jews welcomed each other into their homes to sit at the table and eat and remember the old stories - some say Abraham ; old father Abraham started it by producing two sons - the first one was Ishmael from his loins and his wifes maidservant Sarah ; the second was Isaac his first son with his wife Sarah. The two lads were described as 'brothers' who played well together and believe it or believe it not one went on to begin the head of the Islamic nation and the other the Jewish nation. and they played happily together ??? try Genesis around chapters 15-18 - if you don't believe

ps: can anyone provide a Koran reference to the same event? Lent my Koran to a friend a few yrs back and never got it back?
I am not a Quranic scholar so I didn't find specific Surahs (chapters) or verses to answer your question, but you may be interested in these links...Abraham in the Bible and Quran. In particular I was going to mention how Abraham fits into Muslims' prayers, which is discussed starting at 2;23 minutes.

From AboutIslam.com
"The story of Abraham is mentioned in several chapters of Quran and Chapter fourteen is named after him. However, we first meet Abraham in chapter 2 and we begin to understand his journey to faith in chapter 6."

many thanks 1EDiva - excellent references and food for thought - approaching midnight around here so will put it to one side and tackle it fresh tomorrow. - it is beneficial I think to exam more than our dominant faith particularly very similar ones in many ways - b.b. later!!

error on my original posting - Abraham's wifes maidenservant was Hajah not Sarah ; in fact Sarah was his legally first wife

I am not Muslim so one eyed diva or other knowledgeable person can correct me if wrong

But my understanding is that they fast for the whole month - but only between sunrise and sunset, they do eat every day before and/ or after those times.
January, I have to correct my first answer to your query about fasting between sunrise and sunset. My son pointed out me when I asked today if he got up early to eat breakfast before sunrise. He said the time to eat had passed (it was 5:08...time for Fajr prayer). He said breakfast must be eaten before Fajr prayer. Since I don't fast and it's been years since I used to make sure my husband ate by a certain time, I'd forgotten this.
My son texted me these instructions:

Heard...Lent is Catholic Ramadan
Funny you "said" that Jace! I was just thinking yesterday that me giving up my shows that use foul language (a disturbing trend these days) during Ramadan is like Catholics giving up things during Lent. I'll have to wait until after Ramadan and the EID to get back to Reacher, The Old Man and Paradise.

Blessed Ramadan, Diva! I just started doing my Lenten restrictions on March 5. I like that this year the two periods seem very close. It gives me a sense of fellowship with other religious people.

That is not what I understand Lent to be. Certainly, there are some similarities but don't forget that the season of Lent, just like the Season of Advent is observed by just about every branch of Christianity, not just the Roman Catholics. There are some differences in practice though.

IMO Ramadan asks much more sacrifice from the faithful. I am in awe of Muslims for the joyous way they observe Ramadan.

This year, the world bears witness to an extraordinary celestial and spiritual alignment: Ramadan and Lent, which started on Ash Wednesday, March 5, coincide for the first time in 33 years.

While many may dismiss this as a mere calendrical quirk, this convergence is far more profound. It is a rare opportunity for Muslims and Christians to reflect on their shared humanity, challenge societal divisions, and reignite a global dialogue rooted in compassion and mutual respect.

As a secular Humanist, I believe that we as people must work together to solve problems and right the wrongs of this world without the need for any Deity or religious observance.
I note that here in Scotland, church attendance has fallen to around 7%, the majority being over 60 years old. It also struck me that I had no idea what Lent was all about. I had to look it up on Google .

thank yo u for that clarification One eyed diva.
Not being someone who gets up before sunrise - sunrise and dawn breaking are synonymous i n my mind - but I see they are not exactly the same.
You're welcome, of course.
