Tongue Culture?

Anyone here care to try to explain to me why there are so many photos these days in the media of millennials sticking their tongues out at the camera person. Our generation used to have those stupid photos with the "rabbit ears" behind someone's head but those photos with a tongue sticking out look pretty stupid to me. It seems to say, "Hey look at me, I'm stupid". LOL Is there more to this than I see? PS: No, I'm not an old grouch. Actually, I love joking around but I don't stick my tongue out. Maybe this culture is an urban problem?

I think "rabbit ears" are just as stupid as sticking out one's tongue,

What make tongues more stupid than fingers?

Agreed. I would also like to know the attraction to 'duck lips' although it is not as silly as the tongue thing which is just plain gross. If you don't want to be recognized, just go incognito with sun glasses and hat.

Yes,
Packerjohn, what do you have against "millennials"? You have posted several threads dealing with their supposed immaturity. Yeah, the young do more inane things than us old geezers, but we were the "millennials" of our time. We had our time in the sun. Why do you think they are so different from us?
I would say the younger generation is pretty different from the way we were. Last night I watched one of my old TV shows from the 1950s; this one called "The Twilight Zone". Whenever young people appear they may be greased down with that "little dad will do ya" Brycream but they certainly never had the tatoos nor did they have bull rings sticking out from their noses and they certainly did not put rings on their nipples, etc. or maybe I missed the 50s & 60s. LOL Every generation tries to be different from the older one prior to them. For the record, I believe that in ancient Greece there are records complaining about the younger generation so you might say that I am just keeping a 3,000 year plus tradtion. LOL

Unfortunately, much of western society has certain aspects of "Dumb & Dumber" where the dumbest person is considered a hero to many. I sometimes wonder what is the next stage of this evolution. Perhaps dropping our trousers & sticking our rears out for smartphone photos. I hope not but I understand that there have been accidents where young people have fallen off cliffs while trying to get that "special" photo to put on Facebook or Twitter. Go Figure!

I have taken tens of thousands of photos over many decades. Every time I found a photo with "rabbit ears" I used to throw it out. Like that song says "There is a season" for everything. There is a time for tom foolery & a time to cry & a time to be very serious. Many are those who don't understand this concept.

Right. Who remembers the time when 'mooning' out a car window was a popular thing to do? I think 'death by awesome photo' is nature's way of cleansing the gene pool.

Get out! Every generation has its affectations. If you want to waste your time bemoaning the "in" (or out, in this case) things a generation, other than yours, is up to, you'll certainly be blowing hot air, and nothing more.

PJ, I think you're fairly new, in here. A word to the wise, then: Others before you have become known for being stuck on any number of rant topics, such as proper cowboy attire, tattoos, etc. You're well advised to broaden your horizons, in here, and enjoy the wide range of topics being discussed, without coming back to constantly harp on the same old, same old.

I knew the Maori of New Zealand stuck out their tongues during their war dance, but I didn't know why?
Google says it is a sign of intimidation: The Maori used to practice cannibalism, so sticking out their tongue meant,
we are going to eat you.

Wonder if those in the west are just in need of a meal?
I would lean to a definition of 'look at me, I'm stupid.'

Well... first of all, that attached photo does not appear to be Millennials from where I'm sitting.

My biggest annoyance these days are the women with the "duck lips" thing going on. Who decided THAT was a good look??

A little song,
A little dance,
A little seltzer in your pants!

Learn the lesson of that episode of MTM.

It may be YOU who doesn't understand the concept of the "oneness" of the human experience, where happiness and sadness, love and hate, war and peace, the cosmic Yin and Yang, are just contrasting manifestations of the same thing.

Ommmmmmmmmmmmm................
