(CNN)Nine people are dead and 16 are injured after the driver of a van plowed into multiple pedestrians in Toronto on Monday, Acting Police Chief Peter Yuen said.

The driver, who authorities said hit pedestrians on a busy street north of midtown Toronto, was in custody after leaving a trail of destruction stretching up to a mile, officials said. The van has been located, Toronto Police media representative Gary Long said.

The suspect was previously known to Toronto authorities, according to a US law enforcement official briefed on the matter. Toronto police have not released the suspected driver's name.

It seems that these Vehicle attacks are becoming the prefered way to commit violence in many nations....and it will probably continue to get worse. Mass murder does Not appear to be unique to the U.S.

I'm not too sure about that. His name is Alek Minassian which is probably Armenian in origin and Armenians are usually Christians.

You may very well be correct. We will soon find out. What I don't understand is how the Canadian Gov't can come to the conclusion that it is NOT terrorism so QUICKLY.
Natl news here said, "He was known to U.S. authorities". Whatever that means. Hmm

My sympathy to the victims and their families, rest in peace to those who were killed. I just heard on the news that the police are not ruling out terrorism, and that he was know to authorities in Toronto.

Apparently the guy has mental disorders but has never shown violence according to his closest friend.
Police aren’t ruling out a suicide attempt but why take out innocent victims?

They are currently searching his house and belongings for clues.

Now all the people who even witnessed this will be forever changed.
The abnormalities of the human brain never cease to surprise me.

The courageous that police and emergency workers show in the face of chaos and tragedy is amazing.
Thank goodness for people who can handle these types of situations. They truly put their own lives in jeopardy.
True heros

This is truly sad news

He had a problem with women and admired someone who wanted to get rid of the Chads and the Stacys. The Chads were the men that attracted women and the Stacys were women that did not give the time of day to the driver of the van.

Not a terrorist, just someone that took his frustrations out on others who were innocent.

Take care of yourself Pinky. This is something that you will never forget but you can deal with it.
Talk it out with someone if you can and let your family know how you are feeling.

It feels surreal that it happened in my neighbourhood, on the sidewalks I walk on, outside stores I frequent. These things just don't happen here.

The saddest thing, is, many of the deceased have yet to be identified.

Thank you Warrigal, I am sharing my feelings with family.

A possible motive seems to be unfolding. It appears that the killer was angry with women because he wasn't getting any.

For those who can't read Twitter here is the crucial post

Chads are men who are successful with women and Stacys are women who reject him.

SeaBreeze, my partner had taken the subway around the time of the event, and had to walk home the several blocks because of subway and street closure. A few minutes could have changed our lives.

It will take some time to get over this needless act, and I feel so deeply for all those innocent victims.
