Toronto Police Service dog BINGO was shot and killed last night, by a armed man, who was also shot by Police. BINGO was in his third year of service.

Toronto Police officers were called to the area of Kipling Avenue and Dixon Road for reports of a man with a hand gun last night around ten PM. . Officers found spent shell casings on the lot of a Petro Canada gas station, which indicated that a gun had been fired there. BINGO and his handler began tracking a scent trail through a city park. The armed man shot and killed BINGO, and the man was then shot by Police. The dog died on the scene. The gun man was transported to a trauma center , with gun shot wounds.

In Canada, attacking and or killing a Police Service dog is a offense under the Criminal Code of Canada. The gun man will be charged with a number of criminal offences. Heartfelt condolences to BINGO"s Police partner, and the other TPS dog officers. Funeral arrangements have not been announced at this time, but I can suggest there will be a lot of Police officers and their canine partners at this one. BZ BINGO.

Judging by his official Toronto Police Service photo....BINGO was not a wee dog, more like 90 pounds of German Shepard Dog. Here we call them "Land sharks " or "fur misslles " for their speed and agility. JimB.

What was the dog’s rank?
Canadian Police canines don't have a rank. TPS calls them Police Service Dogs, usually with a short name with three or four letters. In this case BINGO . TPS will no doubt organize a ceremony at some date in the near future. I happened to pass by TPS number 14 Division today, and saw that the 3 flags ( Canadian , Provincial and TPS ) were all at half mast, no doubt at the Orders of the Chief. JimB.

Thank you dear @jimintoronto when I briefly lived in Ontario, Canada, I loved German Shepherds and to me even Rex of Hudson and Rex and the ones encountered are wee doggies. Just a sentimental nickname. Sorry!

First time seen them, they were puppies, such cute wee furballs... Lol!

I think canines on a police force are really cool. They are fearless and courageous. I watched demonstrations on TV on the Animal Planet. The dogs are very astute. They respond on command immediately.

Toronto Police Service held a brief ceremony this morning, outside of the Vet clinic where BINGO was taken after being shot on Tuesday night. The Ontario Vet College in Guelph will perform an autopsy on BINGO, to determine the exact cause of death, and more importantly, to recover the bullets that killed him, to hopefully be matched to the hand gun that was recovered at the scene. The Cown Attorney will use that evidence in the trial of the gun man, in the future. In Canada, attacking or killing a Police Service dog or horse, is a criminal offense, and upon conviction the sentence can run from 5 to 15 years in prison, plus any other charges that may be laid by the Crown.
