Totally Unknown (to me) Vegetable

Today on the clearance rack there were several bags of a green vegetable. I should have taken a photo of the name of it. I thought it had a u and k in it.

It looked like a long tapered green pine cone. Maybe 4 - 6” long. The spikes on it looked prickly. The fellow putting things out hadn’t ever seen them before. He was told that you trim the spikes off. Cut it in half, scoop it out and fill with cream cheese and garlic. We both agreed that it didn’t look or sound appealing.

Any ideas?

Bitter gourd pickle?

View attachment 443141

I always wonder who was hungry enough to try some of these things for the first time .🤔
I have actually had these a few times. I worked with an Indian woman who was determined that I was missing out on good food. She called it Bitter Melon and something that sounded like Carilee (sp?) pronounced Ca-Rye-lee. I really don't know how she made it, but it was chopped into little pieces and was not bitter at all. It was a side dish to curried chicken (Yum) and rice.

Here is a link....but my friend's did not look like the picture on this site, hers was green and half-moon shaped.
