This first paragraph from the linked article gives the impression that the helicopter was coming all the way from Spain...

"A tourist helicopter carrying family members from Spain plunged into the Hudson River in New York City, killing six, including three children."

Sad and shocking. So relieved copter went down in Hudson and not in city. Don't like this tourist attraction though generally safe. Hear helicopters all the time. Thought official business, not tourism.
Very sad for this lovely family and young pilot. .
Listening to news story right now

When I was in the Marines and while in Vietnam, we were moved from one area to another many times via a Huey. I didn't like riding in them then and I still don't trust them today. There were several helicopter crashes in Vietnam with many soldiers, Marines and pilots being killed. Being a door gunner on a Huey was not a good job.

I only went once in a helicopter. It was like a big transparent bubble. It showed us the city. (It was not NYC)
I really did not like the feeling. The vibration, the quick and sudden moves, made me feel uneased.
It is very sad ending for this family.

They said that was the 8th flight of the day for the particular chopper. Some are questioning the pilots hours but unclear if training hours or time that model. He was ex military which usually means they are pretty thorough.

I'd venture to say it was a maintenance issue judging by the use. Maybe a simple preflight checklist where something could've easily been noticed or corrected even if making the flight in a different chopper.

The area where the helicopter went down is my "stomping grounds" when the weather is nice. I take the train to Hoboken and as of last year, on several nice days, I've been walking to the Jersey City side, which is not far from the station. Seeing the area on the news is kind of eerie. If it was a nice day, I might have been there and witnessed the plane coming down!

I took this standing right in front of the sculpture that is seen on the right in the news report screen.

And to the right of the sculpture is this seating area where I sit and relax sometimes. I would have had a birds eye view of the plane coming down. I'll probably always think of the tragedy when I go there from now on.

No fan of the Huey ?

I found them reliable power houses but as a door gunner which I was not you would know , my experience was an incredible chopper granted some had '' band aid '' repairs and should have been grounded .

We had Hueys and OH .

Being reliable wasn’t the issue. The issue was that several of them were being shot down. I remember the Lieutenant telling us that the life expectancy of a door gunner was 1 day. We were fired on a few times, but not with missiles, thank God.
