Transgender rights again

Today's paper had an article about yet another case of a trans high school student. He was born biologically female, but shortly after puberty declared himself to be male, and changed his name to Max. He got permission to use the boy's bathroom, but is not allowed to use the boys' locker room to change for gym. (This makes no sense to me.) My state leans toward the liberal side in issues such as this, but even here they seem to be confused.

Pennsylvania has a case featuring the reverse argument. A male student sued, saying that his privacy rights were violated when a transgender student was allowed to change in the boys' facilities.

What a can of worms has been opened with this issue. I can think of a good solution for the bathroom problem; just replace all the rest rooms with unisex rest rooms. But what about locker rooms?

Where do you stand on this transgender issue? Why has it emerged and gained so much recognition recently? What did gender dysphoric people do before this? Are we moving toward a gender-neutral society, where eventually everyone will be considered an "it?"

I have also read that some people consider themselves transgender and gay. That is really enough to make my head spin!

When my younger daughter was at university, she lived in a rented house and her landlord was a "policeman". He was born as a woman and joined the police as a woman. Later on, she changed gender and considered himself a man. Trouble was that he was now under the regulation height for a policeman. He took the case to a tribunal, who found in his favour and was allowed to serve as a man.

I can't say that I've known any transgender people, but I I have worked alongside both gay and lesbian colleagues.

Our newest colleague is transgender. Whew, what a caseload they have. People from all over the Island make appointments. She is a warm, intelligent person who graduated from Queen’s University, third in her class.

I assume that they allow Max to use the boy's bathroom because it still has some privacy for everyone involved but discourages use of the locker room because it could involve total nudity.

I don't really see where it harms anyone to make some allowances for Max or anyone else in a similar situation.

I agree. I think we have blown this whole thing out of proportion.
