False, that I can remember. I have a vague memory of my dad bringing me out on the front porch of the house in which I grew up (had to be between 1954 and 1956) and mentioning something to that effect while pointing north. Maybe there was news about solar flares or sunspots in that time frame, but I just can't remember if I actually saw anything.
