"Families Outraged After Illinois Fails to Pay Out $288 Million in Lottery Winnings"

Lottery winners in Illinois may have hit the jackpot - but they have not been paid.
The state recently announced that it was not paying out any winnings worth more than $600 until its budget crisis is resolved - but it's still running TV ads promoting the lottery.
An attorney representing some of the winners, Tom Zimmerman, has said there is a staggering $288 million in winnings waiting to be paid out.

One winner, Susan Rick, told INSIDE EDITION: “We won. We finally can have a comfortable life. Suddenly you're gonna the rug out from underneath us. We had a ticket for $250,000.”
A group of Chicago city employees had joined a lotto pool and won a million dollars - but they still haven’t seen a penny of it either.

I have no sympathy for them..... especially if they voted for Bruce Rauner... they are getting what they deserve... or rather NOT getting it.. Enjoy..

That's a little harsh isn't it? Maybe they're a family who scrabbles to get by or maybe there are medical costs to cover or kids to educate or a family who lost jobs or any number of other life issues that they're dealing with and this would make all the difference between living in financial fear and enjoying life a bit or at least relax. You might not buy lottery tickets because you were wise enough and able to organize your life and career adequately but not everyone's life turns out as they plan for it to.

Besides, if the state is still advertising this lottery and selling tickets that aren't going to be honoured (except maybe in decades to come when they get their financial house in order - good luck on that!) then isn't this lying or fraud?

Sure sounds like fraud to me -- selling chances on something you know you can't deliver?? Wonder how the state reacts when someone says "sorry, I can't pay my taxes." Bet that's a whole different ballgame.

Really, really good point! I foresaw this kind of crap coming 40+ years ago in my birthplace, so having personal conviction, I left. The most graft-inundated, corrupt "machine" in our nation. Very glad it has not prevailed thusly in subsequent places I've lived since. It was the only place I've lived where a vehicle-stop could be instantly "bought":

Cop pulls you over, for whatever reason, you place a bill on the seat, 10, 20, whatever. Cop indicates more, or OK, takes bill. You drive away. Sickening, to me, it was.

Let's hear QS deny it!
