Trying New Things

"It would be fun to do something different."

Trying New Things isn't always easy.
It's usually more comfortable to "stick with what we know", playing it safe.

But, trying new things can be exciting, and even beneficial to your brain--giving it something new to learn helps keep it healthy.

Trying new things is a great way to keep life stimulating and rewarding.
It's a great way to break "out of a rut".

What is something you've always wanted to try--and you stop yourself from following through?

What's holding you back?

P.S..Trying new things, especially in retirement, when you have the time to
take on new challenges, will help keep you young at ❤️ heart! 😉

Later in my life I tried skiing and it certainly was not the best thing for my knees. Me and my wife and I enjoy it and we just do the very easy slopes and take it at an extremely slow pace. It is something we enjoy doing together and we enjoy the time back at the Ski Lodges a lot as well.

interesting. true of course. changes and variety definitely help.

Back in the 90s I was trying a bunch of new things. It was interesting and fun.

And you do realize that we have a lot more capacity than we usually give ourselves credit for.

I think there is an artist and a musician in all of us.

I think we have enormous mental capacities that we rarely tap.

Painting in watercolor. You have to be so precise. You can't your mind or make a mistake. I prefer the freedom of being able to do those things. I'm not afraid of anything, I just know myself. Besides I can tell if a watercolorist HAS changed something or made a mistake because my eye does catch it. That's why I avoid it and work in other media. 😊

Something as extreme as sky diving hasn't been on my list. The very thought frightens me. I once played piano but it was so long ago that I have lost any knowledge of how to play. I considered taking it up again but I no longer have a piano so I guess that's out.

I would love to do something creative, maybe pottery, but this is the downside of small-town life. The nearest place that gives lessons is 25 miles away.

yes I have the same problem living out here in the rural shires.. nothing doing here .. I'd have to go into London, and most of these types of activities take place in the evening or night, and I just don't want to travel into the city at night alone..

your post reminds me that I've always wanted to play Guitar.. my daughter played and I paid for lessons for her from the age of 10... and she's an accomplished Bass, as well as Acoustics player, but she definitely doesn't have the patience to teach me... , and anyway I can't learn now I have OA in my fingers...

After our kids were out on their own, we started trying new things and doing things we had not done for years. First out of the box was Scuba Diving. I will share a couple...

We got certified and then went on a series of dives over the next 3-4 years. It was a stretch for my wife, she could swim but did not like putting her face in the water. I worked with her many evenings after our dive training. In time she learned to do it all. By the time we took our final test to get certified, she scored higher than I did.... This turned out to be one of the most enjoyable things we ever did together...!

When we were in our late sixties we went skiing in the high mountains of Crested Butte, Colorado. We had only skied together once before and neither of us had skied since. That was when we were dating in 1968.

We took the chair lift to the top of the hill. Went to an intermediate slope and skied all the way down without stopping or falling! It was exhilarating. We skied a few more runs and then the altitude told us it was time to stop. We enjoyed the rest of our trip and the skiing we were able to do....got home in one piece!

We are still doing new things, but none as exciting as these were....we still may do more diving, we are working on that now...

I'd like to go to the water someplace. But I usually don't. I'm not sure what places to go and I can get uneasy out at places on my own.
I have visited California many times over my lifetime. I love the ocean. Our favorite spot now is Del Coranado. Their beach is wonderful, and they take care of it. Very few weird people in the area. It is not cheap to stay at the hotel, but you can walk to many safe restaurants across from the hotel, so that helps. Since they are in your state, I thought you might want to check it out. They also have a private pool that is wonderful. Go for it, you only live once...

I tried skydiving, roller coasters, and caving, and was not fond of them.

I would love to participate in speedboat races. Don't like boats unless they go really fast.
Be fun to try scuba diving or snorkeling.
I would like to watch an autopsy, and shadow a homicide detective.
I would like to dissect a cadaver.
I would like to watch a few surgeries.

I know this sounds macabre. My friends are used to me checking out roadkill. I want to see what the animal is, and if it is possible, see what they look like inside (just as a spectator).

I have been interested in seeing the insides of things since I found out that Leonardo da Vinci robbed graves (as did many others, in their study of anatomy), when I was six.

I am not interested, should this thought cross your mind, in working in an ER or vet's office because I cannot stand to see injured people or animals frightened and in pain.

For awhile, I thought about taking dead animals and letting them decay by burying them, then boiling their bones, and putting their skeletons back together. When I was in the hospital after double bypass surgery, one of the cardiologists told me he had a story that would gross me out. His wife, a specialist physician, does this, and she has dozens of animal skeletons on display on shelves in their living room. Needless to say, I was fascinated.

Funny how many people have it on their lists, or kind of. I'm probably the same, it is something I would like to have done, but don't think I will be trying it now.

Kind of an odd pair. Closest I have come was in college I took a class across the hall from a human anatomy lab class they spent the semester dissecting cadavers. Never went in, but saw all I wanted to through the door and windows...

Always!

I'm always open to change. Although I love my routine, if I'm not happy I am willing to change it up a bit. We moved to Dallas from Miami in 2006 after 18 years there, even though my corporate headquarters was in Miami. I was willing to take the leap and my company agreed to let me work from home for 14 years. We've never looked back.

We love our life in Dallas, but the area is getting crowded and property taxes are increasing significantly, so I've been looking at real estate in Mexico, Costa Rica and Portugal. As they say, "No guts, no glory".

I could move to another country, but I still couldn't sky dive. ;)

I've often thought about buying in to the annual "World Series of Poker" tournament in Las Vegas. The "buy in" is $10K, and the event usually attracts 7 or 8 thousand players....and the winner usually gets over 6 Million. However, at my age, I doubt that I could withstand the stress of competing for several hours a day, for a week. So I play online for free, and play low limit poker at the local casinos a few times a year.

Thinks.......
I've always fancied learning to fly (in a plane that is), but I'm maybe getting a bit ancient for that. Still, I could maybe take a few lessons, just to say I've done it. Along the same lines, I'd like to fly in a vintage bi-plane.

What else.... I used to do a lot of sailing and sea angling in my teens, but I'd like to do some sport fishing. Some large tuna have been caught off the Scottish coast, and in other parts of the UK, shark fishing is popular.

Plenty of other things I'd like to try. Maybe, clay pigeon shooting (I have a niece who was an international standard clay pigeon shot)...

Dan what part of our vast country do you ski in ? You list your location as just "Canada " so I have to ask. JimB.
