Two High Profile Domestic Abuse Cases In The NFL Two Different Reactions

Over the last couple of years there have two high profile cases of domestic abuse in the NFL which seem to be eliciting two different reactions.

In 2014 when NFLer Ray Rice got caught dragging his wife into an elevator it was OMG why isn't this man locked up. Recently, over the last year younger NFL quarterback Johnny 'football' Manziel has not only had two trips to rehab but has recently been accused of breaking his girlfriend's eardrum in a fight and it's 'he needs help' or a pity party. Now there was a graphic video in the Rice incident which the news looped during the entire report but there is no video with Manziel, reports & stories yes but not that sensational video. Right now the sports types including commentators and players seem to be down playing Manziel's actions/troubles. Personally I think it's time for Johnny 'football' to play in the civil or criminal court system.

Mostly, it's up to the victim to press charges. If the assaults are done in public and are witnessed by someone who is willing to testify, it is possible in some cases for that person to request that charges be filed. What happens in domestic abuse cases is that it is usually the female that is battered and she becomes afraid to file for charges, has been threatened, or feels responsible. In the two cases in the above post, more than likely, the women did not want to risk losing their ATM.

All too often, I have spent hours arresting nut jobs that have hammered their women. There's a lot of work involved with filing paperwork and going through the booking process only to have the charges dropped because the woman had a change of heart. If a weapon is used, a knife, gun, crowbar etc., the DA will take the case without the victim filing the charges. It's seldom done and the DA will only do it if he is extremely confident in a conviction.

I suppose some people feel that because someone plays ball well, let's just sweep their personal lives under the rug. Then again Ray Rice's girlfriend went on to marry him after the incident and downplayed it herself. When she's in court or morgue in the future, she might realize that wasn't the wisest choice perhaps.

When it comes to people's passion, We will often times overlook most things once the dust falls, especially when it comes to sports, but let it be some other person thing not related to their passion or some ilk.

For the life of me I will never understand why sports would make someone a role model. It's something physical they do. I don't get it. It's like watching two guys have a spitting contest and the one who spit the farthest is now your role model. Makes no sense to me.
That being said I would like to see court ordered therapy long intensive therapy ordered along with whatever sentence they get. Would be nice to make them give large donations to battered women and children shelters.

When I worked as a paralegal it always boggled my mind that so many women, battered by husbands/boyfriends, would continue to go back to that boyfriend/husband even after he had put them in the hospital a couple of times, and also refuse to press charges. One client we had I remember in particular because each time she got battered, it was worse than the time before, and we tried everything in our power to convince her to get out, because we were convinced he would ultimately kill her. Sadly, he did.

The NFL is now far and away the favorite sport of Americans. The violence is probably the reason and violence can be how many of the participants deal with other aspects of their lives...

Good point, Ralphy. I wonder what the statistics are on domestic abuse in the NFL as opposed to other sports. (How about boxing?)

Battered Womans's syndrome keeps many women at home with abusers, that and threats to kill their kids. Sad thing is, the time a woman is mostly likely to be killed by her abusive partner is shortly after she leaves him. That is why going into hiding

is so important in so many instances. I had a client whose ex husband, a

cop, with more commendations than you can imagine, keep searching for his ex wife for six years, before finally tracking her down. If her new husband, a special forces guy, had not been home, she would be dead. The cop, once he recovered from his

injuries, was placed in a secure facility for the criminally insane. He had a complete psychotic break.
.

The most dangerous time for a battered woman is when she is preparing to leave. At the meetings where we have spoken to battered women, we have always advised them that when they plan to leave to just do it and say nothing. Go to a safe house or another safe home with relatives or very close friends. If the women tells the abuser that she is leaving, he may kill her. They do not want to lose or give up control.

If necessary and she needs out now, call 9-1-1 and ask the operator to send a policeman. Upon his or her arrival she can then announce to the abuser, "I'm outta' here." I knew a woman that was beaten by her husband over and over again and had left him four times before he finally all but killed her one night. After the last time while she was dying, he called the police and we got there at the same time as the EMT's. We went in first and arrested and cuffed him. Her last words were, "He didn't mean to do it."

It's appears Manziel's girlfriend making her escape or declaring her independence with the restraining order. From what I've seen & heard over the years one wonders if she can adhere to her own edicts.

Here is an example of I guess enabling or over sympathetic response to this punk. Grand Pa blaming the victim/girlfriend a bit anyway and NFLer Dion Sanders also takes a swipe basically saying Johnny football's girl friend is dragging him down. Too much emphasis on poor Johnny and his football career. He's a domestic abuser and violent person, this is off the field persona where he is most of the time is who/what he truely is now anyway.

Also ex college football player johnny didn't learn how to pay attention in a class nor do his employers know how to keep or follow through on their word.

I don't know if anyone here watching a show, called American Crime, (not the one about OJ, though might apply as well), which airs on ABC, Wednesday evenings, but, they showed a good example of how some of these young people on some of these sports teams mentalities get fostered and fueled. Last nights episode was a perfect example. I bring up the show because though it is fictional and it's dealing with a lot of different subject matters, there was the one group scene, between the HS team basketball team on the show last night that just turned my stomach referencing partners be it a female or gay male, but the word to describe them was bi_ ches. The mother who taught her son to be so vile actually called one of young boys who had been violated a w_ore. I do take into consideration her love and concern around her on son, she is teaching her own boy to be an animal with disregard for the feelings of others will likely exhibit abusive behaviors toward any of his future mates..

I've been an interloper on American Crime. I thought the first episode or two wasgood. But others think it's too slow and show too many close ups and faces. That being said the way they portrayed the denial and hyper defensive administrator shows the attitude towards sex crimes and assault. It's all about the precious reputation of all those involved including OJ AND friends.(See you in entertainment)

This Johnny football is a money train for most and someone's "innocent" little boy or grandchild. Apparently his father publicly said Johnny has a year to live without serious help and his grand pa is defending him. Now if the dad knew he was that messed which doesn't happen overnight how come he didn't publicly come out before or advocate an intervention-why little Johnny was going to be a superstar...and rich. Throw in some college football administrators & coaches who didn't want their money train stopped this guy was more than enabled. Don't get me wrong, he apparently has serious issues and personal responsibility here as well. Some of which is affluenza of sorts. I'm sure being a box office draw for the college he got a lot of free passes. But in a day and age of political correctness especially on college campuses I'm surprised Johnny didn't pick up some manners simply by osmosis.
