Perhaps, just like we have developed "heat seeking missiles" more advanced civilizations have developed "life seeking" technologies than scan for various life forms. And what seems like eons to us might be an idle afternoon to some greater force. Just because we can't see the patterns doesn't mean they don't exist. I would liken us to the goldfish swimming in a tank, trying to imagine what lies outside the tank.
