Demonstrations sweeping across the United States and Europe following the death of George Floyd have reignited a debate in Britain about monuments to those involved in the country’s imperialist past.

A number of sculptures have been taken down while others, such as a statue to Britain’s World War Two leader Winston Churchill, opposite parliament, have been defaced.

The council had said there were “some aspects of Robert Baden-Powell’s life that are considered less worthy of commemoration”. Police said the statue could be a target.

I hadn't realized things were getting that hot over there.

yes been like it for a good week now... it's disgraceful
Are there any differences between protests there and in the US? You haven't had any smashing, burning or looting, have you?

Are blacks treated unfairly there or have issues with the police? I just head on Sky News 85 police offices are attacked daily....

I didn't know racism was a big issue there.

Some people like to protest because it's easier than using their brains. Most of the trouble seems to be from young white "liberals" who want something to protest about without caring what it is. The same mob were probably protesting about climate change a few months ago. There are also the left wing anarchists who will use any excuse to cause trouble.

I shouldn't be surprised if all this gives a boost to the extreme right. I worry that one day it will be illegal to be British.

I wonder how many of these 'protestors' have lived in Africa. They might be astonished at the racial prejudice between the different African tribes.
Why do they come to Britain and want to be regarded as British? Are they ashamed of their true origins?

The same protesters maybe were involved in climate change demonstrations, but there was at least one interloper! I joined them at a meeting in Oxford, though not choosing to break any laws. .;)

I think Captain Cook's statue in Sydney has been taken into protective custody.

I see James Cook as an amazing individual for his nautical and navigational skills but our first nation people see him as the man who declared the Australian continent to be "terra nullius", a legal term for unoccupied land. On his first encounter with the local people, he ordered his sailors to open fire and a man was shot dead. After that, as far as they were concerned, it all went to hell when the penal ships sailed into what is now Sydney Harbour and disgorged their hapless passengers.

People bleed but statues do not, which is why this sentiment I read today makes sense to me:

It’s amazing how somehow this fundamental human rights issue has become about statues.
The statues, and I cannot emphasise this enough, do not care. Jon Kudelka

The irony and hypocracy of the demands that the
statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oxford University be taken
down are being led by "Rhodes Scholars"!

Cecil Rhodes left money to be spent on education for
black and/or poor children, the demonstrators have
benefitted from his money, both for their education
and living costs while learning.

I wouldn't set too much store by it. It's the usual rent a mob.

On Thursday they vandalised a statue of Robert the Bruce in Scotland.

He died in 1329, before Columbus sailed, let alone the first slaver.
There was a statue of Columbus in St. Paul, Minnesota that was torn down and thrown into the river. All of these statues that are being torn down are part of our history. This is what history is; some good things and some were bad things, but nonetheless, they are part of our history. A country without history is just a country. I worry that the statues on all of the battlefields that are there will also be torn down. These radicals also want all of the army forts that were named after Confederate heroes to also be renamed, along with free college tuition, free low-income housing, free food and many other insane demands. So many people have worked their entire life to have what they do and yet have still paid off their college bills and have made a good living from their degree.

When you are just starting out in life like these young worthless creatures and have never contributed anything to society, you don't get to make demands. If that were so, I have my own list that I would like applied.

It's become legalised vandalism. At least Trump is showing a bit of backbone. I'm ashamed at the way the British government is giving in to the demands of these people. Actually, when you stop to think about it, they don't really have much basis for their complaints (in Britain that is. The situation in America is different).

A policeman was kicked by youths and a female officer tried to intervene. He was attending a call out. Other youths were watching and taking videos of the incident. If one white officer is beaten to death or dies from their injuries I believe the far right will 'kick off'. The fuse just needs to be lit. These are unstable times we live in.

I also read that the street name Pennny Lane in Liverpool was defaced as some idiot thought it referred to a James Penny who was active in the slave trade (according to Wikipedia). So yes Education is clearly needed here! Regarding the statues, well it's something to focus on, a gesture. If the statues are put in a museum are people going to be harassed if they visit that museum and/or will some activist decide to burn it down. I also wonder how many young people had recognised the statue of Winston Churchill without being told.

Sometimes I refer back to my relatives in WW1 who were in France and my dear grandfather in WW2 and just think what a waste. I don't know who wrote this but I think it's apt: The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history

I think Boris Johnson always wanted to be PM and now I simply write: 'Be careful what you wish for it just might come true' (or something like that.

Just venting my emotions:mad: ok now☺

Yes, I also don't understand about Robert the Bruce!

I did go to the above link and learned that they've boarded up the statue of Churchill.

Is there racism in Britain?

Thanks for replies.

Mike.
Can you name any of the 'Rhodes Scholars' leading the demands to take down the statue of Cecil Rhodes? Could it be merely a defensive mechanism to protect the image of Oxford University?

Edit - OK, I've read the article more fully and it's a case of no names, no pack drill. Lord Patton is talking generally and the protestors are not trying to protect the university.

There is racism in the UK, but's reverse racism.

There is a Black Police Officers Association, but a White police officers' association would be illegal.

I'm glad you had the courage to state what many of us are thinking. The BBC especially is obviously anti-white.

Can't agree at all, and many of us here have been very thankful for the BBC during this lockdown. I recognise the efforts made by the BBC to show diversity in terms of presenters of both news programmes, or sports etc., but as a public funded body they're bound by rules to making them promote widely accepted norms our political parties of all kinds espouse.

Why is it that whenever the BBC has a piece which involves children, they rarely choose white children to interview....and when there is a discussion featuring a number of people which are supposed to represent the population, the whites are in the minority.

I must say I'm not worried if the BBC does practise a bit of positive discrimination so far as which child gets chosen to interview, but I have to admit to my discomfort at the positive discrimination I see the BBC demonstrating when choosing so many women to commentate upon, provide punditry on, or interview sportsmen after a big game. They drive me up the wall when they ask the guy whose side has just lost, "How do you feel?", (ditto the winners, what are they to say to such a touchie feelie, banal question?). .

There is a Black Police Officers Association, but a White police officers' association would be illegal.

As a topical example of reverse racism, over the weekend a plane carrying a banner "White Lives Matter" flew over a northern town.

The guy who paid for the trip is being investigated by the police.

You need to do some research on reverse discrimination and racism. Let's not pretend that UK is innocent with regard to racial issues. That's almost laughable. 😒🙄

At no time did I suggest that.

As a member of an ethnic and sectarian minority myself I was subject to racism nearly every day when I lived in England.

As I said elsewhere, I have spent time behind English bars for wearing my national emblem on my national saint's day.

With me it's personal.
