UK: Don’t take Pfizer vaccine if you have serious allergies

LONDON (AP) — British regulators warned Wednesday that people who have a history of serious allergic reactions shouldn’t receive the new Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as they investigate two adverse reactions that occurred on the first day of the country’s mass vaccination program.

The U.K.’s Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is looking into whether the reactions were linked to the vaccine. The two people affected were staff members with the National Health Service who had a history of allergies, and both are recovering. Authorities have not specified what their reactions were.

In the meantime, the regulator has issued the warning for anyone who has had a significant allergic reaction to a vaccine, medicine or food. That includes anyone who has been told to carry an adrenaline shot or others who have had potentially fatal allergic reactions.

“As is common with new vaccines the MHRA have advised on a precautionary basis that people with a significant history of allergic reactions do not receive this vaccination after two people with a history of significant allergic reactions responded adversely yesterday,” Professor Stephen Powis, medical director for the NHS in England, said in a statement. “Both are recovering well.”

The medical regulatory agency also said vaccinations should not be carried out in facilities that don’t have resuscitation equipment.

Pfizer and BioNTech said they were working with investigators “to better understand each case and its causes.″

Late-stage trials of the vaccine found “no serious safety concerns,” the companies said. More than 42,000 people have received two doses of the shot during those trials.

“In the pivotal phase three clinical trial, this vaccine was generally well tolerated with no serious safety concerns reported by the independent Data Monitoring Committee,” the companies said.

Documents published by the two companies showed that people with a history of severe allergic reactions were excluded from the trials, and doctors were advised to look out for such reactions in trial participants who weren’t previously known to have severe allergies.

Even in non-emergency situations, health authorities must closely monitor new vaccines and medications because studies in tens of thousands of people can’t detect a rare risk that would affect 1 in 1 million.

Dr. Peter Openshaw, a professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College London, said there is a “very small” chance of an allergic reaction to any vaccine.

The MHRA last week gave emergency authorization to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, making Britain the first country to allow its widespread use.

The U.K. began its mass vaccination program on Tuesday, offering the shot to people over 80, nursing home staff and some NHS workers. It’s not clear how many people have received the jab so far, the

As part of its emergency authorization for the vaccine, the MHRA required healthcare workers to report any adverse reactions to help regulators gather more information about safety and effectiveness.

The agency is monitoring the vaccine rollout closely and “will now investigate these cases in more detail to understand if the allergic reactions were linked to the vaccine or were incidental,” he said. “The fact that we know so soon about these two allergic reactions and that the regulator has acted on this to issue precautionary advice shows that this monitoring system is working well.”

Dr. June Raine, head of the medical regulatory agency, informed a Parliamentary committee about the reactions during previously scheduled testimony on the pandemic.

“We know from the very extensive clinical trials that this wasn’t a feature” of the vaccine, she said. “But if we need to strengthen our advice, now that we have had this experience in the vulnerable populations, the groups who have been selected as a priority, we get that advice to the field immediately.”

Sounds like basic common sense to me, and probably applies to any new medication.
Yes except new medications have been tested and studied for a couple of years before being approved so most serious side effects are known before being approved for use.

"The medical regulatory agency also said vaccinations should not be carried out in facilities that don’t have resuscitation equipment."

Good advice.

Just by coincidence the day they start administering the vaccine in the UK an FDA report is released and note that 6 people died during the trials. 2 took the vaccine and 4 others had a placebo. And a nurse comes out and says she spiked a 105 degree fever after getting the vaccine.

These people were closely monitored and had quick access to medical care but the average person wont regardless of hospital capacity.

First time I've ever heard of anything like this: "The medical regulatory agency also said vaccinations should not be carried out in facilities that don’t have resuscitation equipment."

That's what's called "A really big hint." I guess that means they won't be dispensing them at markets, CVS, Target, etc. along with a discount food coupon like they offer with flu shots.

I just remembered something that this warning reminded me of. Some years ago, they decided to have aerial spraying of pesticide to kill Fruit Flies. Naturally people protested because they were concerned about the health dangers. We were told there was no risk to our health, so we shouldn't be concerned because the spray was harmless to people, but....."You must keep your cars covered or garaged because the spray will eat the paint off."

I saw that too. And some are suggesting they start in senior homes under the guise of getting to the most vunerable. Here we go again the seniors or PEOPLE in those facilities are considered disposable again.

And it all starts.

I've been waiting for reports such as this, and I expect more in the very near future.

No way Russians will be able to comply. :ROFLMAO: The Irish won't either. :ROFLMAO:
The Russia recommendations also include no alcohol 2 weeks prior to receiving the vaccine. Said alcohol will put a strain on the body in combination with vaccine and a side effect could include heart trouble, nausea, headaches and internal bleeding.

Well if nothing else not drinking should cure a lot of things. Maybe that's the point and make people think the vaccine actually worked.

Why? Do you know something we don'tknow?
We won't have a choice, will we?

and, How are you feeling? Worried about you!
I have been looking over the different make-ups of the different vaccines and also the testing results. It appears to me that Moderna's efficacy rate of 94.5% is way above what was expected, says Fauci, who anticipated a rate of between 70-75%. Moderna also had fewer incidents during their testing. The Pfizer BioBTech vaccine requires colder storage and they recommend that the injections not be given to patients without having resuscitation equipment standing by.

I am not a scientist, so I go with the data and looking at the charts.

Today was a better day for me. It's been nine days now since the onset and I still cannot get rid of the fever, although it is only a low grade, it still concerns me. I actually had a little breakfast today.

I wouldn't be concerned about a fever unless it's life threatening. It's my understanding that fever indicates your immune system is fighting & winning. Viruses & bacteria can't survive the higher temperature.

That's good to know.

That's good to know.
That's why it's not a good idea to reduce fever with Tylenol or aspirin; which is a frequently-used remedy. That prolongs your illness by interfering with your immune system's job.
Also why someone with food poisoning will take something to stop the diarrhea. Also not a good idea. Diarrhea & vomiting is how our immune system eliminates the offending bacteria quickly.

Aunt Marg, I can't understand why you are apparently so delighted to learn that people who are allergic to a particular substance should not take that substance. Doesn't that apply to each and every medicine and vaccine on earth? It's just common sense. When you get any kind of medication, whether it's a prescription from your doctor or over the counter, don't you always see that sort of warning about allergies? So, once again, why all the paranoid suspicion about this one?

It's because this disease was politicized early in the game, and that enters into every single discussion touching on the subject. That includes statistics on death and hospital crowding, wearing masks, whether we trust Dr. Fauci, whether to take the vaccine ... it never ends.

Let's step back from our various political platforms and just for once try to be honest. How many of us on the forum are experts on any of those subjects? Expert enough to really know what we are talking about with all these endless putdowns of a vaccine which seems to have a high probability of wiping out the pandemic? And even more endless putdowns of the pharmaceutical companies, scientific researchers, medical teams working day and night desperately trying to save lives? Or at least shrugging them off.

Isn't it time, guys (and gals) to say enough already with the adolescent sniping? And before some of you start revving up your computers to tell me that I don't have any right to tell you what you can say, of course I don't. But like you, I can express my opinion about the serious tragedy the world is going through right now, and my annoyance with all the "I told you so" smirking every time the slightest crack in the medical system turns up. Come on. Really. Grow up.

I didn't realize that according to, Sunny, simply coming here to this forum and voicing ones take and/or opinion on topics is construed as being immature, hence your mention of "grow up".

That's a shame, because comments such as yours only work to stifle perfectly legit and justified conversation related to the stances that people like myself have.

I apologize for upsetting you, Sunny, in that I refuse to be a sucker in the name of science, and I also refuse to buy into all that the media feeds me.

Uh....yeah. Either you agree with me or grow up.

You know if the warning is coming from the manufacturer it would make sense to heed the precaution. Some of us are not gonna just throw caution to the wind and take something we shouldn't. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they need to grow up. You need to chill out.

It's ok to be concerned about a medication that has been rushed through the system and now things are popping up on the eve before they want us to take it.

Kansas is getting it's vaccine from Pfizer so I don't think I'll be taking it. I'm gonna talk to the nurses in employee health and see what they think and see if there's another option that might be safer.

Uh....yeah. Either you agree with me or grow up.
Or be called an ass.

what would be a good name for those individuals not willing to get the shot? I eagerly await member’s replies 😁

That's easy, Shalimar. Mules, donkeys, asses?

(Well, maybe not donkeys, as that has a political connotation.) 😁
