UK Lawmakers Vote To Approve Three-Parent Babies

One in 6500 babies in the UK is allegedly born with a mitochondrial disorder. So now they seem to be allowing babies to have the DNA of two mothers and the father to avoid such health problems. Although I approve of in-vitro fertilization, between a woman and a man, I disagree with the experimental aspect of involving three donors in the process. It is very unnatural to me, what do you think?

I've had the process done myself Josiah when I was younger and found out that I couldn't become pregnant naturally due a physical issue. My husband fertilized my eggs and they implanted embryos from my husband and myself, but the procedure didn't take. I am absolutely in favor of a couple who cannot have children to responsibly go through in vitro fertilization I just question the experimental aspect of involving three people.

Lots of things used to be considered unnatural. I thought about it when I heard this on the radio, and had a ponder, then thought, well, why not if it helps a mother have a healthy child? I know that scientists like to push at boundaries [I think it's in their job description] but I am all for screening out serious health risks for children.

Is this eugenics by any other name? I am all for eradicating health issues but just how far is it going to go. Globally we cannot feed our population now and to be really blunt about this the natural selection element is being dramatically eroded.

It is replacing 37 genes in the mitochondria.....no interference with the nucleus; no interference with any characteristics; only replacement of genes helping to create energy in the body.

two women were interviewed yesterday; one whose daughter had died due to lack of these genes; and one whose daughter was dying for the same reason.
so this is just removing the possibility of having a baby with a life-limiting inherited disease; that, of course is a serious ethical debate; but it leads to nothing else.

Big island but same gene pool. I've heard for decades unless a population spreads out and literally and figuratively brings in new blood these diseases or disorders will pop up.

Three parents would make for smaller alimony payments in case of a divorce.

Many disorders are called "sex related"..... not that kind of sex... but are passed on only from the mother to the son.. Hemophilia is one.. color blindness another.. there are many more. If that defective gene in the mitochondria contains genes that are only passed on from the mother to her children, and can be replaced with genes from an unaffected woman.... that's gotta be a good thing.. right?
