United Airlines Made Woman Put Her Dog in the Overhead Bin, Causing Him To Die From Suffocation

Even though this woman had paid the $125 fee to carry the dog on the flight in a carrier and place it under the seat in front of her, the stewardess forced her to put the dog in the overhead bin or be thrown off the flight. The woman, either out of ignorance or fear, did what the stewardess ordered. The dog was heard barking softly until it went quiet from lack of oxygen.

There were witnesses that said the stewardess knew there was a live dog in the carrier, and she forced the woman to do it anyway. I'm surprised those around her didn't make a big fuss about it, the woman had every right to have the dog on board.

The airlines refunded the woman's dog carrier fee and flight fee, and played stupid about knowing there was a dog in there. There should be a lawsuit I imagine, I think it's a terrible thing to happen. I heard them on the radio last night talking about the whole thing....a shame. More here.

Then, I guess they sent someone's dog that was bound for Kansas to Japan, I'd be really upset if these things happened to my pets.

That stewardess (I think they're called flight attendants now) should lose her job immediately. And the dog owner should launch a million dollar lawsuit against the airline, to insure that it will never happen again.

Well, it's a horrible thing that happened, but I'd never, ever take a pet on an airline. When we had our 3-year old Husky and flew to Las Vegas, we left her at Camp Bow Wow and she was 100% fine. We could even see her playing, on a computer feed at the hotel we stayed at in Vegas. It was really cool seeing her on the computer.

Most folks wouldn't say anything in fear of themselves being taken off of the flight. I'm an outspoken person, but only in certain situations. Being too outspoken can get a person in as much trouble as the person that the trouble is happening to.

Thing is, I'm now seeing more and more people taking their small dog into grocery stores and other stores. They don't care if there is a sign on the door that says "Service Dogs Only". One grocery store manager confronted a lady about her small dog being in the store and riding in the grocery cart. She said, "Yea, I seen the sign, but I'm not going to keep my dog in the car when it's this hot, even with the windows down some." She went on to say "I really wish people would just mind their own business."

The story that I got from a friend of mine who is still at the airline told me that the dog's carrier was extending into the aisle, which the FAA does not allow. The choice should have been to either get a smaller carrier or place the dog in the baggage hold area. It's hard to make comments when I have not heard all of the story, but from just reading the article, I would say the the F/A was not trained properly on how to deal with pets on-board. If the F/A was also the Purser, she should have known better. This is one of the reasons why airlines do not like carrying pets, even though they advertise that they do. United has had their share of issues with carrying pets and having bad outcomes.

If I had been that woman, I would have got off the plane with my dog and made a stink about it inside the airport.
It's hard to say depending on how desperately you needed to fly but I would definitely make a stink on the airplane. Now she has to live with not standing up for her little dog.

SB...this is shocking, a little puppy who fought for his little life gasping for breath , while United airlines murdered him in open view almost... I'm sick to my stomach!!

, and the Thanks for that Info...Oldman, it further re-enforces my determination and habit to drive our pets overseas .. it's a PITA to have to take a 3 day drive, when we can fly in 2.5 hours...but I wouldn't risk my dogs on a flight... I've heard such horrendous tales of the way they're treated sometimes.. .

So, what's the answer...........fly, but don't take your pet. Let someone take care of it for you. There are reliable people out there.

A friend of mine went to Vegas with her daughter and asked me to stay at her place for the weekend and take care of her small dog. The dog knew me very well and we had fun together. I slept on the floor in the living room and he slept right beside me. He curled up on my lap in a chair when I watched tv. Oh yea, it was definitely a "party weekend" with him. LOL

I surely would have said something, too, and even taken the dog out of that compartment. I think it must have suffocated.

Yep if you can't take your dog or cat.. and you HAVE to fly.. that's what Boarding kennels are for...or even pet sitters..

Holly, that is exactly what you have to do in Australia. Pets aren't allowed in planes with the passengers.
Alternatively, you can send a pet quite safely by rail but rail doesn't cover the whole country.
I have often looked after a pet for a couple of weeks for family and friends.

This woman should never, ever have another pet. Ever! Who, in their right mind, would put an animal in a place without air? Would you put a child in a place where they couldn't breathe because someone told you to do so? She suffocated her puppy. She sat there and heard the poor thing crying and she just SAT THERE? Hello? What happened to Question Authority? Or, better yet what happened to common sense?

She should be on a 'not allowed to have any living pets' ever again list. The poor little puppy. What a fool. The hostess and the airline aren't off the hook either but it wasn't their dog. It was hers. She killed it. I do not suffer fools gladly.

Leave your pet in a kennel or at home with a pet sitter, or with a friend. I have been pet sitting for nearly 20 years. Pets would rather be home in their own familiar environment. It's better and safer for them. This breaks my heart. If you must take a pet on a plane please make it a stuffed animal! The poor little thing was terrified to death. What an idiot.
