Unusual Behaviour with my Latest Computer

I got another refurbished computer with Windows 11 in it,
it has an i7 CPU with 6 Cores, yet it won't open some older
documents, even with the old programme that wrote them,
but that old programme loads and works properly, all the
documents come from a similar computer, that had a 4 core
CPU running Windows 10, some of the documents were old,
probably written on a Windows XP machine, the Windows 10,
machine was capable of running 32 & 64 bit programmes, as
this one is, they are both HP, with years between them, but are
basically similar.

Do any of you computer whizzes, know anything that might
help me to get these documents open, I want to change some
of the content, rather than write a new website.

Thank you for any help that you might share.

Mike.

The first thing that occurs to me is that these types of files are not associated with the 3rd party programs you want to use.

What are theses documents? Word, Excel? Do you get any error messages when trying to open those documents?

Thank you all for your replies.

The documents are old websites, written in, Serif Web Plus 7,
many years ago and I would like to use some of the content,
but I can't open any of them.

Yet, I can use the Serif Web Plus 7, with no problems at all.

This all might sound redundant but it might help. Save what you want to use in a format the new computer can use. Use one of your machines that can do this. Is it possible to save what you want in a different format? You might have to arrange the info differently.

So you are not a computer knowledgeable person. You need to know the file name extensions. Better web search yourself as others herein are not going to know since there are myriad file types.

For example let's say you have a file with a ".bmp" extension like "mydogs.bmp" That will provide many hits with websites explaining what bmp files are and offer to read and or edit them or list applications that can do so. Here is one such website.

BMP File - What is a .bmp file and how do I open it?

I am fairly knowledgeable David, but the files that I can't
open, don't have a dot-anything behind them, they are
complete works that are saved to "My Documents", there
are lots of them, in that file, the ones I want to open are
complete, maybe some fonts are missing also some films,
the Serif WebPlus X7 Programme and its predecessors also
later ones were very good, you wrote your site a bit like a
Newsletter, you could test it on the net as you built it, page
by page, when you were happy, you just went into the file
menu at the top left, down the drop down to Publish and
the software did it all, turned into HTML or whatever, to get
on the internet, it tested it, in all search engines, but any edits
were easy, you just, opened the WPP programme and opened
the job and it was like a newsletter again, so these type of files
are not opening.

My next move will be to take the HDD and interrogate it, just to
see if the files there will transfer, I do have a docking Station.

So those files you are having issues with are the raw inputs to your Serif WebPlus X7 application that obviously has a custom process with defined input format structures it needs to work with. It otherwise opens fine on your new Windows 11 machine. The issue may be a result of either the file header fields or the data.

What you may try doing is with a file hex editor app, compare the file headers between those it can open and those it cannot. Logic is there is something different between files it can work with and those it cannot. Would need to be able to switch between hex and ASCII display modes. May be able to simply transfer the data from files it cannot open into the template of ones it does work with. May not need to delete the data in the file used as a template and instead just append the data in front of the end of file characters.

It could be a data format issue if the program you are using cannot interpret the data because it is using a different version. So may start to read the data but finds some unknown structure it simply aborts from further processing. If such is the issue, you might delete most of the data leaving say just a single few characters to process. If that works, then something further along the data sequence would be the cause. Then remove say half the data and repeat seeing if it then runs etc. If it doesn't work at all then the header is likely being interpreted say from some version level as not processable.

... but the files that I can't open, don't have a dot-anything behind them ...
Sorry I can't help you Mike. Web development is something I've never tried.
But the thing is, ALL files have an extension ... the dot-anything behind them. ALL files have extensions.
Windows by default does not show all file extensions but there is a place in settings to enable showing the extensions.
I just don't recall where that setting is but recall having seen it. In fact I seldom use Windows. I'm a Linux user.

EDIT: There's that setting to show all file extensions ... and ... Maybe if you right click on the file and look at file properties, it will list the extension (?)

Here's a link that provides a link to possible help ...
Opening old Serif WebPlus X7 files

"Serif no longer provides support for WebPlus but there is an unofficial support forum in which you could ask for help."
Information about the Legacy Plus Range

Again, I have no experience or knowledge with your files and software but thought the links might either help or trigger thoughts and ideas. Good Luck Mike !!!

I'm computer illiterate. I tried to open my Facebook account and when I put in my Password it came back it was the wrong one and put in a new Password. I did this and every time I put in the new Password it came back, "this is the wrong one " and to try again. I have now tried 4 different ones, and it still says the same thing. Any ideas on how to get into my account?

I use Firefox and it saves logins and passwords.
If I click on the 3-line icon in the upper right of the browser ... then "Passwords" in the drop down menu, I can view all saved logins and passwords.

@oscash ... Facebook help center says ...

If you forgot your password and can't log in

  1. On the login screen, click Forgot password?.
  2. Enter the email address, mobile phone number, full name or username associated with your account, then click Search.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Thank you all again for your replies, I have been trying to fix
things myself, I did go to the properties of the files that don't
open, in there I changed the settings to share with everybody,
globally, this seems to work up to a point.

If a font is missing, this seems to be a problem for Windows 11,
any older versions would ask to be allowed to substitute another
in its place, I don't get that, I get told that it is missing, but not,
that I can get a fix automatically, as it never states what the text
is that is missing the font, then I can't fix it because it won't open.

This is an interesting, if annoying find, all caused through me being
lazy and wanting to recycle old work, rather than write it all new.

Thanks again for your replies, maybe I should go back to sleep and
let the dust settle.

I'm not familiar with the program you used. The lack of any extension (the . part) is telling.

What format did Serif Web Plus 7 save in?

I suggest you copy the file. Then, add an extension to the file name. Try adding .HTML for example, and then click that. Failing that, go for the simplest one, add .TXT. It might help is Serif Web Plus 7 isn't using some proprietary format.

The WebPlus X7 saved files as WPP files, all Serif programmes
saved files thus, Page Plus, as, PPP, Draw Plus as DPP, or you
are allowed to save as PDF, VaughnJB, but the programme
had no trouble opening any work, until now, they could also
open PDF and allow editing.

I never had any trouble in the past, only since getting Windows 11.

Thanks for the information Naturally: I did all that it said but I still can't get into my account, it has been blocked for some reason. .
