Kicking paddy melons on roadsides
L

What are Paddy melons ?

The Afghan/Camel melon is so-called because it's thought to have been introduced by Afghan camel train operators in the 1860s – either deliberately as camel tucker, or accidentally amid other produce imported along with the camels.

The legendary camel trains once operated on transport routes all across Outback Australia and, not surprisingly, the first and worst infestations of the melons were recorded along the tracks used by the 'trains'.

Do the trains still run there? Are paddy melons still growing? Are they edible or just junk? I never heard of them.
Oh, also, what became of the camels? Interesting story.

Listing vacation resorts that people should never plan to go to.

Yes @Sunny trains still run across the vast open tree less plains of the outback where camels were used for transport .
we’ve driven across is that same outback area in 5 days ( approx 3.000 km ) from Adelaide South Aust ….to Perth , western Australia.
We traveled for 2 years ( car & caravan ) after selling our home in City and we visited a camel farm where they captured wild camels 🐫 ( they had a white one )

And yes lots of wild camels in that part of the Aust …I may have photos on my iPad of some of the areas we climbed / visited / stayed
