Unusual popular songs from when you were a teen

One that pops into my head once in awhile is the haunting 1961 song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", by Brit group The Tokens. which became a number 1 hit in the U.S.

It was based upon a version of the song "Wimoweh" by The Weavers in 1951, which in turn had been based upon "Mbube" by Zulu singer Soloman Linda and his group The Evening Birds in 1939.
I love The Lion Sleeps Tonight!

Here's another:

The Rubberband Man - The Spinners

I remember it well....

Never heard that. It's cute!

Wow, I forgot about that one!

I thing a porn star singing about sex and the song becoming a big hit is a bit unusual. But hey, it was the 70's ! It's got a good beat and you can dance to it (American Bandstand reference).

I never knew the song was about sex, or that it was performed by a porn star. All I remember was that it had a catchy tune and was easy to dance to.

If you like weird, Ape Call boobily-a-bah. "If you wanna have a good time... Go Ape!" That was my idea of unusual.
Alternatively, consider The Bird's the Word.

And, on that note, albeit less than a decade away (until I'm officially senior as I'm currently 47), I had to chime in after running across this posting doing a completely different & unrelated web search.

At least you guys didn't have high school in the 90s. For my "unusual song", I've got King Missile performing "Detachable *****". Hey, someone else opened the foray into this line of unusual genres before I got here. And, yes, this played on the radio and was a popular hit.

Two songs that finally expressed women's feelings about narcessistic men:

these boots are mad for walking

and you're so vein
