I don’t mean to degrade people or their job, but the Brit’s have a more reasonable hourly rate. I don’t know all that’s involved with being a UPS driver, but I always understood it to be was that each driver loaded his own truck before hitting the road to make their deliveries. What special skills or education are needed to deliver a package?
I agree with much of what you say , but I do think our delivery drivers are paid too low.. not agreeing that they should be paid the same as a nurse or doctor.. but in the UK especially our roads are jammed solid with traffic.. the roads are narrow, especially here in the rural shires.. and these guys have a massive amount of parcels to get offloaded in a certain time... so I feel that they should be paid a little more than they are.. minimum wage is just too little....that's all delivery drivers, not just UPS..I don’t mean to degrade people or their job, but the Brit’s have a more reasonable hourly rate. These jobs are averaging $80,000+ per year without o/t, and their benefits are above the national average. It’s a great job, if you are lucky enough to get hired by them.
I heard when working for UPS it's about numbers wether it's unloading/loading so many packages per hour. Or completing so many deliveries per hour. That's why many UPS trucks park like crap/they are an emergency vehicle or something. Amazon drivers are starting to do the same thing. Some things have to be delivered but many customers just want it now.I don’t mean to degrade people or their job, but the Brit’s have a more reasonable hourly rate. I agree that this seems really high. I hope it attracts better drivers. Some of the ones here really need a remedial course in how to place a package on a porch. Don't dump it on the outside edge in full view of everyone driving by, don't drop it from such a height that I can hear it hit 2 rooms away, etc. Maybe it's just my area but the Amazon drivers do a much better job.I don’t mean to degrade people or their job, but the Brit’s have a more reasonable hourly rate. It's still like that where my son lives. Everyone knows the driver. My son has his phone number and can text him and ask him to open the front door and set the package inside the house, etc. It's one of the many benefits of being rural. In the 70s I lived in a small town in Wyoming, the local UPS driver was legendary.
He got to know everyone personally, and our cars. He'd often wave you down on the road to give you a package, had a couple of deliveries from him at the bar. There was a story of him delivering to a remote ranch on horseback. If he still works for UPS he'd be deserving of this, for sure.
i used to be in the receiving department for a big company got to know the drivers from various companies etc...
Many drivers have routes they bid on ........and the pressure is on to meet number and accuracy goals etc
those just starting out may end with what they call junk routes that include rural or mostly residential and places tough to get in and out quickly...
Regular business routes you can load up deliver and be done where residential you are on the road sometimes til 8 -9 at night.
With any of these contract things the report does not tell you all the backside of the job it is harder then just driving and delivering packages
Me neither, not many old ones either...I have never seen an overweight UPS Driver!!
