Vacuum Greenhouse Gases From the Sky

NYT: The Biden administration will spend $1.2 billion to help build the nation’s first two commercial-scale plants to vacuum carbon dioxide pollution from the atmosphere, a nascent technology that some scientists say could be a breakthrough in the fight against global warming, but that others fear is an extravagant boondoggle.
Pros: Fossil fuels corporations can keep polluting, and tax payers pick up the costs.
Cons: It may not work.

It's a great idea, one which I've wondered about before I ever heard of this. Who's backing it? Fossil fuel and the government. Which do you trust less? But after the banter is done, I have one question that I wonder about. If this thing actually works, where do you put all the carbon dioxide that you take out of the atmosphere? Carbonated soft drinks? Beer?

No doubt it's collect and process in some way.

This type of thing is a good way to create jobs and encourage innovation. Who knows what spin-off tech could come out of it? It's tough to imagine a single plant doing this type of thing would make an ounce of difference globally, but then again the US are innovators and love to lead the pack, so why not?

I thought that was the tree's job. Uh oh they'll be contacting their union reps by noon
Well it was, but we got rid of vast amounts of forest trees over the last 50 years, which didn't help global warming, and now global warming seems to be getting rid of the rest of the trees via forest fires. Once started global warming begins to feed on itself, actually creating more causes that accelerates the growth of warming. For example when Greenland and the arctic regions lose their glaciers, the cold glacial water that runs into sea and changes directions of currents isn't the only problem. The mere absence of glaciers removes a big reflective surface that no longer reflects heat back into space and the Earth gets warmer still.

Maybe carbon dioxide vacuums will work. I hope they will be more than just spin-offs for new technologies. No one has the stomach for cutting back on their entitled lives. But I can only hold my breath for a few more years, and then I will be joining Elvis.
