Vertigo reportedly being re-made!

It's apparently starring Robert Downey, Jr., presumably in the Scottie role, and being screen written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), so evidently it is in the works.

That's pretty shocking, considering that Hitchcock's Vertigo is one of the greatest films of all time, maybe even the greatest. I don't know whether it's an ego project, or whether the money people will just be trying to develop revenue piggybacking on the success & fame of the classic.

There has been plenty of tut-tutting over the years re Jimmy Stewart being an older man, whereas Kim Novak was a young starlet. But Stewart was only 49 when Vertigo was shot. Downey is already 59, and filming has not started.
Who knows what they'll come up with, but IMO a re-make would be fraught with peril.

Such a dumb move! Hopefully, they'll come to their senses before it's too late and spare themselves embarrassment and humiliation. Hubris extraordinaire.

Vertigo is so perfect in every way. It's one of my favorite films and I've seen it at least a dozen times.

I saw a media observer today talking about young people who only know remakes and often have no idea an original ever existed.

This isn't entirely new though. The 1950s saw some earlier films remade, the 1970s saw even more 1950s films remade. And how much Shakespeare was cribbed from much earlier works?

I went with a buddy to see it in one of those art house theaters that show retro movies.
My friend made an astute observation about Jimmy Stewart...that he could communicate so much with just a facial expression and no dialogue.
I hated the ending though. I don't know what better ending it could have been but something involving a more intricate plot reveal.
I own it on dvd I think. I have a hard time remembering why the woman was pretending to be dead. Maybe I'll watch it if I do own it.

As for remakes, just look how many remakes of classic movies are so disappointing compared to the originals. Today's actors just don't have what it takes.

Kate Winslet, if she's not too old, would have done well in the Novack role.

...
There was an alternative ending that had been demanded by a jerk at the Production Code. The alternative ending showed Scottie and Midge listening to the radio, which announces that Gavin Elster (Madeline's husband) was being pursued in Europe, and would b e caught. Hitchcock was eventually able to ditch that and release the picture as is. I've seen the alternative ending, and it's fine. But I like the picture the way Hitch wanted it. Reportedly that alternative ending is included as an extra on the DVD and Blu-ray releases.

For those who are Vertigo and/or Hitchcock fans, there's a good documentary by Martin Scorsese called "Obessed With Vertigo". It's very well done, and only 30 minutes long. It's loaded with keen insights. The YouTube copy is a little faded but very watchable:

Interesting. I don't know if I'll see the remake, but I saw the original so long ago that I don't really remember much. I think that Robert Downey, Jr. is a good actor. Wow! He's 59 already?! I'd be interested to know who else will be cast.

I've never seen the original.

I've seen the same first 5 minutes probably half a dozen times, though.
Geez, Dave, you really ought to see it. I don't know if you're a Hitchcock fan, but Vertigo is generally regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Bernard Herrmann's music score alone is worth the price of admission.

Never saw all of Vertigo. But a funny story. My brother lived with his British friend's family for a while.

His friend's Dad would put on old British Spy movies...but right when you were about to find out who the killer was, his Father would say, "Well! I'm going to make some toast"...and off he'd go into the kitchen.

Every Spy movie his Dad would go and make toast at the crux of the movie! I found this to be so funny, that to this day whenever something exciting is about to happen...I say "Well, I'm going to make some toast!"
