Very upset at netflix

I don't recall if I have previously said that I am profoundly deaf. But, in any event, I absolutely require sub-titles on anything I watch: movies, documentaries etc. 95% of Netflix material has NO SUB-TITLES. I have complained and complained, to no avail. Almost everything now days has subtitles or closed captioning (C.C.), but Netflix does not include this in their material.

Netflix simply does not care about the 1 in 16 people who are hard of hearing or totally deaf.

I sent an email to my U.S. Senator Barbara Harris, about this issue, but all I ever got in return was an endless barrage of anti-Republicanism. Not one word about helping deaf and hard of hearing people.

I am in the same boat.

I need closed caption. I don't have Netflix. I have to set the closed captioning on my cable remote.

Good luck on your quest to convert Netflix.

I live in Canada. I wish there was a way to convert French to English on the closed captioning. That would give me a lot more channels free.

When you say profoundly deaf have you tried hooking up headphones or powered speakers close to you.

Thats what I have.

There is a thread on it. I provided a diagram for easy hookup to the t.v.

I have seen subtitles available in the things I watch on Netflix. Maybe look again at the menu when you first choose the show you watch. It's at the beginning that you have to select them.

I use Netflix all the time and always turn the subtitles on. You have to push the "up" arrow key to get up to the top of the screen, and you'll see the option to turn the subtitles on. Once you do it, it stays on for everything you watch.

Yes, I already do that. I have hooked my stereo up to the headphone jack on my TV. From there all I have to do is put on my hearing aids, plug my "over the ear" high quality headphones into the stereo and adjust volume as needed. This does not actually give me the same hearing as I used to have but with subtitles it works. Strange how subtitles gives me the illusion of hearing words.

Me too. It's been a long time since I ran into a show that didn't have subtitles. My hearing loss isn't profound, but I have trouble hearing dialects and foreign accents.

Subtitles are a default setting the way I have Netflix set up. I fiddled around until I found the size, color and all I wanted and now it's always on.

I have looked and looked for the "up arrow" and I sure can't find it. It is certainly not on the work bar at the bottom of the screen when the film starts.

Hi Traveler, maybe try this. When your show is playing, move your cursor/mouse to the top right portion of the screen. A small caption box will appear, click on it and the subtitles options will appear.

Anyway, that's how it works for my Netflix account. I hope this helps.

It also keeps your reading ability up to date. I think I read about 2 hours a day watching television closed caption.

We have closed captioning turned on for Netflix. I haven't seen anything without it. Maybe we haven't watched any of the shows Traveler watches.

I owe you an apology, Traveler. When I talked about Netflix settings, I was forgetting I have Roku, and that's where I made my closed captioning settings. I have no idea how Netflix works without Roku.

Try this. It just worked for me.

On your "streaming" screen, click on Netflix. Then, when you see the boxes for all their shows, click on the one you want.

You will get a short list of options, such as Play, Audio & Subtitles, etc. Click on that one. You will have the option of turning subtitles on or off.

Let me know if it works.

Sunny, sorry to be such a dunce but I don't understand that bit about "streaming screen". Heck, I don't even know what a streaming screen is.
Let me tell you how I go about watching Netflix. After I turn on my laptop, I click on the big "E" at the bottom of the page. Then , at the TOP of the page a search bar appears and I type in "Netflix". That, naturally takes me directly to Netflix.

Now, where I live, I see a work bar, at the TOP OF THE SCREEN, where I can choose from a list of options: movies, Tv shows etc. If I select a particular movie, I will then see another work bar at the BOTTOM is the screen as the film begins to play. There is an icon that I click on and it tells me what, if any, sub-titles are available (English, Spanish, German etc). 90% of the time, I have no option of any subtitles in any language. Often, the only sub-title language option I have is Spanish.

Having said that, I live right at the border and almost everyone is Mexican. That may be the main problem. It may be that the issue is with my Wifi provider. ?????

Sorry, Traveler, when I said "Streaming screen," I was referring to the screen that shows up when I get on Roku. In other words, not cable TV. If you get Netflix, you are streaming.

Anyway, what I described was what happens on my TV. If that doesn't work for you, try MissMolly's suggestion above.
