Vitamins or nutrients you've decided have been beneficial to you?

I'm inclined to believe that collagen (aka, collagen peptides) has helped with another aspect of recovery from my cancer radiation treatment side effects. The focus of radiation had been on my throat and sides of my neck. The radiation does destroy squamous-cell carcinoma tissue cells, but to an extent also normal cells.

I'll disregard the temporary 'real bad sunburn' kind of effect on the surface (redness & blistering), which healed within maybe 10 days after the end of treatment. But the skin on the right side of my neck, face and jaw was lifeless & thin. My impression was that the muscles in those areas also seemed to have withered to some extent.

I believe collagen plus a high protein intake has helped with rebuilding these areas.

I checked with SO. He was prescribed Colchicine for his last gout episode 2-3 hears ago with no citrus, no pork, limited this and that. About three months later he went back to normal eating but for cherry juice.

I've been eating raw, unsalted pumpkin seeds for years, and so far, I haven't had any prostate problems—at least that I know of—and I am eighty-two years old. I should also mention that my father suffered for quite a number of years from an enlarged prostate, getting up four or five times a night to urinate and never getting a good night’s sleep. However, just three days after eating a small handful of pumpkin seeds daily, my father slept through the night without needing to get up to urinate. Also, at his next physical exam, his doctor was quite surprised that my father's prostate was the same size as a young man's. After discovering the benefits of pumpkin seeds my father never had any more problems with his prostate for the rest of his life.

Thanks for this tip! I could use some shrinking of the prostate myself. Have to get up 5 times a night.

Can you get the raw pumpkin seeds at a health food store? With or without shells? How much are they where you are. Pretty expensive around here, like $10 a pound with shells on.

Thanks

I take 1000 mg of fish oil per day, which definitely lowers my blood lipids, and increases my good cholesterol. I don't think it does anything for my bad cholesterol though.

I was eating some oatmeal every day a few years ago, which lowered my bad cholesterol, but stopped after it made me bloat.

I saw the results in my before and after blood tests.

My primary doctor suggested to stop all the vitamins except for Vitamin D. Having virtually no sun for nearly 6 months where I live creates a deficiency.

But I also take a slow release (liposomal) vitamin C daily.
Michael, in another thread you've recently imdicated your wife takes a collagen supplement regularly. I know people express that, for various reasons, in their own experience they find it beneficial — some deem it good for reducing joint pain, some for promoting the strength & health of their skin, some for hair & nails, etc.

In my second post on this thread (post #51), I explained in what way I've considered collagen peptides beneficial for me. I've become curious about the range of benefits from collagen. What does your wife feel it does for her?

I take so many sometimes I wonder about the cost. Most, however were recommended by my doctor and when I retired, I went off all my prescriptions except Lipitor.

So I take an eye supplement (ared 2), a probiotic, omega something fish oil, something for anxiety called Hello Peace, turmeric for joints, vit B complex, vit D.

I take vitamin C, a multi-vitamin, and vitamin B complex. My blood work indicates low folate, so I take it from time to time until I get a better reading, and my doctor suggests magnesium / Cascara Sagrada for regularity. I could probably leave off those in the first sentence, but I need the others I named. I've tried leaving them off, and don't do well.

I don’t take any. I “eat the rainbow” and get what I need from food. Before I retired, I was mostly inside, and needed Vitamin D. Now that I can spend a couple hours outside every day, my level is better than when I took the supplement. At my last checkup in December, all my other numbers were in the green/good range.

I take D3 and B-2 daily. D3 supposedly aides in toughening up the immune system. The B-2 is also known as Riboflavin and aides in various health and growth issues.

I take the multivitamin Centrum for men 50+. A blood test showed I was low on iron and for some reason Centrum has no iron, so I'm taking an iron supplement now and iron level is fine.

I feel that, unless you have medical conditions that require supplements, a good diet should provide all the vitamins and nutrients that you need. I think the people who benefit most from supplements are the people who make and sell them.
