Walking Backwards, Why not?

Just read an interesting article that encourages walking backwards to improve health. I am definitely going to try this, in my apartment.

Why walking backwards can be good for your health and brain

"According to research, walking backwards can have surprising benefits for both your physical health and your brain, as Michael Mosley recently explored in a recent episode of the BBC podcast and Radio 4 show Just One Thing...........

But due to the difference in biomechanics, backwards walking can actually bring some physical benefits. It is often used in physiotherapy to relieve back pain, knee problems and arthritis. Some studies even suggest that backwards walking can positively affect cognitive abilities such as memory, reaction time and problem-solving skills."

Now I know why I see people walking backwards on the treadmill at the gym. I figured they had a reason, but it looks kinda weird!

I might try this on a regular flat floor... but (am I actually going to confess this, Pepper?!) never down steps like I did a couple of years ago. I'd had back pain and discovered that coming down the steps backwards was a lot less painful. Came down verrrry slooowy... step, step. Then this blonde airhead totally forgot about the last step and thought I was stepping onto the ground floor but stepped on air instead.

Unfortunately at the bottom of the steps is a concrete wall and I crashed into it with the back of my head. Let's just say it didn't help the ol' back. 😩 BUT now that you mentioned the benefits of walking backwards, I'll probably do it just to see what it's like. I won't go upstairs. 😇

Michael Mosley writes in the Daily Mail, every day, he has
different advice each day, good reads, under health if you
go there.

Mike.

Ive been walking backwards a bit on my walks with the dogs. It feels good but not worth the risk of tripping. I could see the dogs stopping suddenly and me going down on my @@@! I’ve got a great treadmill I’d like to try it on. In fact, I shall try it now. I can even raise the incline.

Becasue I like to see wehre I'm going and I think that it can't be too healthy to either be walking into or constantly tripping over things and/or constantly having your neck (arthritic in my case) cranked around to try and see where you going but not really seeing as well as you do if you keep your head in its natural position and walk it the way God/nature (pick your preference) intended.

That said your doing this is none of my business. I've better things to care about than what foolishness other people get up to especially in their own home. So enjoy. I wanted to say knock yourself out but thought better of it since it seems like this might actually be a side effect of trying this silly health benefit. But, eh, it's your business.

I hope this doesn't catch on, however, to the point that it becomes a trend and idiots start doing it on the street. One of my pet peeves is people who are talking to someone on a sidewalk or in a hallway that are heavily trafficked and step back without looking behind them often right into you who had no reason to anticpate their stepping back. I'm also very arthritic and can't dodge them. Then they dare look at me like it's my fault my powerchair didn't leap out of their way because they decided to step backward without looking to see if anyone was behind them.

I really need morons walking backward into me in public? Good God why are such things even suggested?

What an incredible coincidence! Yesterday, my grandson wanted to go to my local playground, where I played as a kid, and also his dad. We went to the backfield so he & his dad could play soccer. He sat me down on a bench, telling me to only sit here (he's five).

To my amazement, to my left a woman was walking backwards! She walked this way the length of the field & back! Then, she left. I did so want to speak to her!

I love freaky coincidences.

PS
After only one day of doing this, walking backwards, ONLY in the privacy of my home, I have already felt benefits, esp, in hamstrings which have been stiff lately. The only problem so far is I forget to do it, but I will train myself to make this a routine. Going up & down that hallway backwards only.

I have a galley kitchen which was wonderful to work in at one time but now at this stage not so good .
After chemo I would get dizzy and lose balance turning from one counter to another.
A nurse friend told me to take steps backwards to the other counter then turn around.... et voila!!.... no more dizzy and off balance.
It is only a few steps but it works.

Now on reading this I will do it more around the house and in apt building hallways where I can.
