This is what trade treaties get us... Now you won't know where your meat was raised, or slaughtered. Good bye sovereignty. This COO labeling was a law passed by OUR congress... NOW the WTO is calling the shots. With TPP.. Chinese chickens fed sewage and doused with formaldehyde will be next.. AND you will not be allowed the choice of what you buy... or from where. Nice..

Under threat of trade retaliation from Canada and Mexico, the House has voted to to repeal a law requiring country-of-origin labels on packages of beef, pork and poultry.
The World Trade Organization rejected a U.S. appeal last month, ruling that the labels that say where animals were born, raised and slaughtered are discriminatory against the two U.S. border countries. Both have said they plan to ask the WTO for permission to impose billions of dollars in tariffs on American goods.

The House voted 300-131 late Wednesday to repeal labels that tell consumers what countries the meat is from — for example, "born in Canada, raised and slaughtered in the United States" or "born, raised and slaughtered in the United States." The Senate has yet to act.

The WTO ruled against the labels last year, prompting the appeal that was again rejected in May. The Obama administration has already revised the labels once to try to comply with previous WTO rulings, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has said it's now up to Congress to change the law to avoid retaliation from the two countries.

Call your senator on this one.

Seriously? No one here cares that you will no longer know what country your pork Chop was raised or slaughtered? I sure do.

I'm concerned !! Same thing happening in Australia!! We are assured when buying any pork if you purchase,a cut with bone in it Its From Aus,...... I heard on the radio Friday , NOW Overseas manufactures have developed a mould where they can make a leg of pork look like a fresh / corned / ham leg by moulding scraps of meat arround a bone to make it appear to be a leg ..... believe it's then able be imported to any other country.....

Sorry if it appears I'm taking over your topic, I was sent these photos of so called FISH / Tuna/ Salmon .....being prepaired to be canned...... which we are all eating ........funny looking fish...

Just another thing, I have been suffering from Hepititis A . Since Christmas because I purchased / ate frozen berries, which I was not aware of were packed/ grown in China .. I read ALL LABELS NOW

I would like a lot more transparency and information in our food labeling, antibiotic/hormone-free, GMO free, raised and processed in USA (or wherever), etc. I like to decide if I want to buy something, given all the info. I've been reading labels a lot more than I ever did when I was young, with all the deceptive practices going on. I won't eat anything if I know it's from somewhere like China, I already stopped buying jerky for my dog from China years ago.

The meat (which is mostly chicken) I buy from our local chicken farm which is owned by the Mennonites in our area.. They encourage the public to enter and see how they process the meat which is Government inspected.. They also own the local slaughterhouse and sell meat from there which is also government inspected..
Up here in the Northern Ontario area, we don't seem to have much China meat or fish, however the BIG supermarkets do carry that junk and it isn't a good seller..

I did read somewhere that the salmon from China is fed human excrement as food..
WOW !!! who wants that???

Well, If the TPP passes... that's exactly what you may be eating.. Because it will involve Asian countries where there are little laws to regulate how meat is raised, what the animal is fed, or how it's processed. Right now it's Canada and Mexico which are not that much of a concern...but Vietnam? China? Seriously, I will not by pet treats that are made in these countries as hundreds of dogs were poisoned by formaldehyde in treats made there.. and I'm gonna take the chance of eating food processed there?

I think the main point is that with these trade deals, any foreign country OR Corporation that feels it is being treated unfairly can sue the US Government.. just as Canada and Mexico have done with this meat labeling thing.. Our Congress passed the law requiring meat be labeled with Country of Origin. NOW it has been forced to pass a law repealing it in order to not be fined billions of dollars because of it. There will be NO WAY to know if you are buying American produced food unless you actually go to the producer. How many people in big cities are able to buy a cow or a pig and butcher it?

It cuts both ways Quicksilver. Big tobacco has attempted to sue the Australian government using a trade agreement with China for projected, not actual, losses caused by our plain packaging legislation. We are very concerned that we will pay a heavy price for changes to our quarantine laws and our pharmaceutical benefits scheme once the new TPP comes into affect. Even if the law suits are unsuccessful, they are very time consuming and costly.

Increasingly, out food supplies are ALL being "Adulterated" in the name of Profit. There is a lot of concern about the GMO modification of our grain crops, but meat and poultry producers are Also playing games with our food supplies. We live in an area with lots of chicken and turkey farms....mostly owned by, or under contract, to Tyson foods. These producers can take a chicken or turkey from a baby, to market ready, in a matter of 3 or 4 months...instead of the 8 to 12 months that nature would take. They do so by lacing the poultry food with any number of Steroids and Growth Hormones. These "additives" do not go away...they remain in the flesh, and are consumed when we eat the chickens and turkeys. Cattle and Pig producers are also using the same tactics...so as to get the animals to maturity and to market ASAP, thus increasing the profit margins.

Is it any wonder why Obesity is quickly becoming such a problem????

On my way to becoming a full fledged vegetarian after looking through this. I've known there has been a lot of issues with our food supplies, but, that snake salmon. ack! My chicken has an awful taste, the deli turkey has so much sweet tasting flavoring pumped into depending on the brand, not buying the Butter Ball nor Prima Della, grossly sweet, both of them can't imagine what's pumped into these days. I don't buy deli meat often, but sometimes I just want a little to make a sandwich to take with me to the beach or snack on in between meals when I'm doing low-carb. But the meats in general just has an off putting taste to them these days, forget the fish, that has long ago not resembled what's on the package.

Life expectancy is increasing...people are living longer...so perhaps all this trash in our foods isn't as bad as it would appear. However, along with that longevity, health issues seem to be on the rise, as people age. Perhaps the Health Care Industry is finding creative ways to offset the crap in our food, and the air we breathe....after all, there are huge profits in Health Care.

We had a doctor being interviewed on a morning talkback radio, recently. He said when we pass away , if we are buried we won't decay as fast because of all the preservatives we are consuming in our foods

The answer is simple, raise your own livestock or buy locally grown. Problem solved, well, maybe...

Sure Ralphy. I'll be putting a herd on my 30' X 125" City lot in a few weeks.. and after I slaughter my cow.. I'll trade some of the meat for the Veggies grown on the balconies of the High-rise apartment building on the next block.

A herd? Nah, just one big pig could be fattened up on your daily garbage and then you could butcher it. Should feed you for a year. Pork chops and bacon, ummm...

In high school to avoid hard courses I signed up for one in agriculture. By it came time for me to choose a project all that was left was to keep a cow. The city had a rural and suburban section. I lived in the wrong part of town so hustled down to switch courses, auto mechanics was a better "gut" course for my particular situation...

I hate to keep harping about this HOWEVER, this morning I have again called my Congressman and urged him to hold strong against the Presidential strong arming of Democrats and again vote NO on the TAA which will prevent Fast tracking of the TPP. Congress AND the American public should be able to see what the TPP entails before allowing it to become law. The American worker has taken it in the shorts each time a trade deal like this is reached.
