Was there anything from the past that kept you watching the TV for days

On Nov. 22, 1963, President J.F.K the 35th President of the United States was assassinated. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was walking my school friend out of the house when the news came on TV. Walter Kronkite came on and said, "The President has been shot". I started watching it and could not turn off the TV. I was in total shock. To be honest I don't think we shut the TV for days. I would even turn the TV on when I went to my bedroom. My sister did the same thing and so did my parents. Then when they captured Lee Harvey Oswald who was the suspected shooter was killed by Jack Ruby we even saw that. I can't remember anything else keeping me so fixated on anything else like that on TV. Did anything happen on tv that you couldn't stop watching?

My husband phoned me from work and asked me to turn on the tv news. Someone in his office had been listening to the radio and heard about the 911 attack. I sat there and relayed to them what was being reported and it was while I was watching that the second tower was hit.
I don't think the tv was turned off for quite some time!

On August 25th 1973, 11 year old girl Joanne Ratcliffe and 4 year old Kirste Gordon went missing from Adelaide Oval
They had attended a football match at Adelaide Oval with Joanne's father Mr Ratcliffe
The 2 girls went off to the toilet but when they did not return Mr Ratcliffe went looking for them and raised the alarm
The girls have not been seen since and the mystery remains unsolved despite thousands of lines of enquiries to Police

It was from a busy suburban swimming spot, Glenelg Beach in South Australia, that three children Jane 9, Arnna 7 and Grant 4 vanished forever on Wednesday, January 26, 1966 Australia Day. They had been sent on the local bus by their mother,
Mrs Nancy Beaumont, travelling from their home in Somerton Park just a short 5 minute bus ride away, on a very hot day.
It was just after 10 am when their mother last saw them walking up to the corner of Diagonal Road to catch the bus.
They turned and waved to her as they reached the corner and they were never seen again and this mystery is also unsolved

I have to thank TV news. Before them, we only 'heard' about tragedies, and momentous events. Today, we get to see them, and in some way, we participate. The Kennedy Assassination, baby Jesses, 911, the Chilean coal Miners, the OJ trial, the Jackson trial, New Orleans & Katrina are all TV events. You really have to thank them for unifying us in a common goal.

I was also obsessed with the O.J. trial and watched it all the time. 911 was also very important to me, so I also watched everything about what happened that day.
It was crazy, Sas, related to the O.J. trial, I couldn't wait to turn the television on first thing in the morning, get the coffee going, and settle into watching the goings-on.

Elian Gonzalez, the state of Florida vs. his father over custody of Elian. So happy when father and son reunited. Year 2000, I think.

Of course, President Kennedy, his brother Robert, Martin Luther King, Space Shuttle Challenger, Chicago Seven, O.J. Oh, why go on. You guys remember all these.

The Beatles!

We must take care that we don't become numbed by it all. Each of these events is a tragedy, with people suffering and losing loved ones. We must never forget that.
One event which sticks in my mind is when Libya suffered a bombing raid. It happened while BBC Breakfast was being aired and I think the pictures hadn't been edited. They showed a woman lying on the ground with half her head blown off. The look on Selena Scott's face showed her shock. I thought she was going to be sick!

I remember tuning into the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, as for the Kennedy's and MLK... I was just a grasshopper. :)

When we had a rare tornado here in May of 1998. An F3 passed about 3 miles from my house. The local news was almost entirely devoted to this rare event. To even get any tornado in upstate NY is unusual, but an F3....

I forgot Casey Anthony. I was riveted. Must say I like trials on TV. Tot Mom. She just opened a private detective agency. No kidding.

For me I've found I'm less likely to become obsessed with real news, I cut the cord back in 2009. No Facebook, twitter,,,etc. I only watch what I can stream including documentaries and such. You can get someone's opinion wrapped up usually less than 1 hour. Although I did get hung up with 'Breaking Bad' followed by 'Hell on Wheels' a few years ago. Recently it's been Korean soap operas.

Yes of course 911.... that was a terrible shock for everyone worldwide,... but more recently ( and oddly I mentioned it on here today).. was the horror murder in the USA of a wife and 2 little girls where a father (Chris Watts) placed his toddler children in oil tanks and left them for dead because he wanted to be with his new lover.. there are murders every day but that one just seemed so heinous and cold blooded.

Loved Breaking Bad. Hard to stop watching one episode after another.

Remember this sickening event?
James Bulger was killed one month short of his third birthday in 1993
It was a murder that shocked Britain and the rest of the World
James was tortured to death by two 10-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables
who left him on a railway track to be hit by a train which cut James legs off
Would you believe these 2 'monsters' were later 'transported' to Australia and given new identities 🤬
