We are all works in progress, time to start thinking about New Year's resolutions

I don't mean to be a nag, but I'm starting to compile my list. Typically I try to start following my resolutions the day after Christmas so that the final days of the year serve as a shakedown cruise for the New Year.

I never make NY resolutions. I learned my lesson at the age of 7 when after being told about the concept of NY resolutions, I proudly announced that I would wash the dishes every night of the year for our whole family of 6..a huge undertaking for a tiny little thing who had to stand on a box to reach the sink.

After 12 months I was counting the days off until the last day of the year so I didn't have to do it any more , but when I breathed a huge sigh of relief and delightedly announced that I'd done my year of dish washing, I got a smack from my father and told to get on with it...and from the age of 7 until I left home as an adult I had to wash the dishes every night of my life!!:(

I'll make the same one I made last year, that is not to keep any of the ones I make about dieting therefore, I've succeeded in keeping my resolution. .

No good deed goes unpunished.

Josiah9, in the pic next to your name is a stone, my village has a lot of these stones, they are very old and nobody really knows why they are there [in a circle.]

Sorry, forgot to answer your post! Senior moment. I sometimes do make resolutions and try to stick to them at times, but I always wait until the New Year to make them, at the moment I want to enjoy Christmas.:)

I posted my NY resolution intentions one year ago on a Facebook forum and got just about the same uniformly negative response. Maybe one of my resolutions this year should be not to raise the subject on internet forums anymore.

Thanks for the stone info Josiah9, they are pretty identical to our village stones. It's early days yet for your resolution thread to get going, leave it a while and others will post on here. You didn't say what your resolutions are? It may be interesting for us to know. Life is busy around Christmas, so although we may not be making any resolutions yet, we can at least think about it.

The only resolutions I made when I was younger were something like lose weight, etc. I never followed through on New Years resolutions, had more success just doing things any time during the year when I set my mind to it, so I never really needed a special day to start anything positive. I just live every year trying to make the best of and cherish the moment, and not spend too much time with regrets from the past or worry of the future. Many folks waste their time in the present with such things, and tomorrow that time is gone for good.

A partial list of my 2015 New Years Resolutions

Drink 8 oz of water half an hour before every meal and before going to bed.

30 minutes on rowing machine every morning.

Take on one non routine "to do" item a day.

Cut back on nonbusiness internet stuff, especially in the evening

Read one nonfiction book for every two works of fiction.

Going upstairs try not to use the hand rail.

Hot compress on eyes first thing in the morning for dry eyes

The next two resolutions are prompted by a risk factor I have for blood clots.

Don't sit in front of the computer for more than 10 minutes without standing up and stretching for at least 30 seconds. Use the interuption to remind yourself the correct your head forward posture problem (need a 10 minute timer ap to make this work).

Don't drive for more than 20 minutes without getting out of the car and stretching for at least 30 seconds. Use the interuption to remind yourself the correct your head forward posture problem (need a 20 minute timer on Kindle to make this work).

Meh, I give up on resolutions. Every year I make the same one -- to lose weight and eat better and every year I break my diet. Though this year I did lose some 30 pounds but I did it over the summer and not immediately following NY's. Cardiologist was impressed; I'm impressed he was impressed because most doctors fail to support and encourage it when I do lose weight. (I'm mobility-impaired and in chronic pain so it no small feat and doctors always assume I can't do it.) He still thinks I'm looking at heart surgery within five years. :(

I think if I made any resolutions I truly want (like buying a house) I'd be cursing my luck so I'm just not going to do it but plug along working on my goals.

As has been said above, you'll reform whatever bad habit whenever it is that you truly mean and are willing to.

Very commendable indeed, Carolyn.

I recently spoke with my younger son and my quite new daughter-in-law about giving them my online book business and they both seem quite enthusiastic about the prospect. This will certainly increase my family interactions. I hope it goes smoothly.

I resolve to not make any New Year's resolutions. That's one way to be sure I won't break them. Besides, I'm pretty well settled into being the way I am. Change isn't always good:)

Josia9 That's quite an impressive list of resolutions you have planned out.I always try to drink more water [and less cups of tea] but fail miserably as I am a tea addict.I always want to read more non fiction too, then a good fiction book draws me in.So after a bit of thought, my resolutions will be , do more walks [just bought some new walking boots] drink less tea, stop yakking on the phone so much [big bills] join the local history club [meaning to do that for 4 years].

Looks like a good list Oakapple. I wish you success in keeping your resolutions and a warm feeling of accomplishment for doing something you set out to do.

BTW in glancing at your profile I noticed that you list The West Wing as a favorite TV series. I find this quite astonishing because the show is entirely about an American political institution. Although I love British TV series (As Time Goes By my fav) I can't imagine watching a series about Number 10 or the House of Parliament. Indeed despite my best efforts to understand British politics I always come away puzzled and I just throw up my hands reading Barnaby Rudge.

Noticed this thread, and it's that time of year again, so I thought I'd add this in:

I quit making New Year's resolutions years ago when something occurred to me: the resolutions I kept were things I would have done anyway, and resolutions I didn't keep were virtually impossible. So I figured I'd save myself a lot of aggravation and not do this ritual anymore. :)

p.s. to anyone who knows: how long has this forum been on the web? the post before mine was in 2014!!
