We Seniors have a new problem to solve...

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
This applies to us all. USA, Canadian, UK, Australia. Drones. Two things I can think of in the last few years has caused so many problems. Lasers. Airline pilots keep reporting being blinded by them on takeoffs and landings and now drones. In Hillview Kentucky a man has been charged with shooting a drone from the sky over (he claims) his property. (https://www.yahoo.com/tech/s/man-shoots-down-drone-hovering-000032027.html). In California the legislature is proposing a law to make shooting them down by a law enforcement officer legal. More and more I read about them being used to peer into bedroom windows, over pools where children and young girls are sun bathing.

Now I may be able to understand the child in many who just use them as a toy but more and more they pose a hazard to air traffic. I believe Pandora's box is open on this....what do we do to contain it now??

I agree. It's going to become a very serious problem. On the one hand there are a lot of legitimate tasks that drones are uniquely capable of performing, but at the same time so many ways to violate people's privacy and worse. Well, I'm not going to fret. I'll let the next generation deal with it.

Used properly they may save lives.
Shark patrol is the obvious area where we may find them useful.

I absolutely agree and many other legitimate uses. I am not in favor of Amazon delivering with them however. John, helium balloons are not in the same league.

Drones...like anything else...can be a useful tool...or misused, and cause harm. Again, tonight, on the news there was a report of an airliner having a close encounter with a drone while landing. It is just a question of time before one of these things gets sucked into a jet engine, and causes a major crash and loss of life. Let's face it...there is that number of idiots out there who can find a way to screw up almost anything....and these drones seem to be giving them a whole new avenue to explore.

I think that all drone owners need to be required to buy drone license in the county that live in and paint the license # on the air craft. They should have to renew every 5 years. I realize that there are drone owners who are responsible citizens, but any idiot with the money can buy one and cause great pain to others. My son in law has one, but he knows how to safely use it. He is an air comptroller. He also has his flying license, but he can afford to buy a license and would do it.

As for drones causing issues with airliners and aviation in general. Every month during our general meetings and safety awareness meetings, we were speaking about drones and the idiots using lasers to blind pilots. Drones do have some potential to be good for the public and therefore need to be regulated and licensed. The problem at hand is the speed, altitude and the ability that drones have in changing directions in a heartbeat. (No pun intended.) These issues can all be worked out, so that mankind will be able to use drones where applicable, productively and may be a lifesaver in some instances.

Because most drones are made from nonferrous parts, they are non detectable on radars and on an airliner's TCAS system. TCAS stands for Traffic Collision Avoidance System, which alerts pilots when there is traffic in the area. I believe that as it stands now, drone operators must receive a license from the FAA to fly their drone and must also maintain height and speed requirements. They must also avoid airports within a 5-mile limit. (Not sure about the mileage limit.) I flew for United for 34 years and never encountered a drone or a laser, thankfully. I always did wonder what kind of an idiot was it that would shine a laser at any aircraft.

Like most people, if those are over your property then shoot it down....BUT you can get arrested for it so be careful and like illegal fireworks cops don't really give a damn.

THIS happened just yesterday, Friday,Drone, airliner have 100-foot near miss above New York.

+1, totally agree.
