Are these in place in Europe??

Fast food chains were never meant to be a place for someone to raise a family of 6, they were to be part time positions with some full-time advancements. Mostly the fast food restaurants were for school aged kids to learn how to interact with people, with a job, to offer spending money, and to begin responsibility learning for their future.
The part time position was not intended to pay for a house, it is a stepping stone to move on.
$15.00/hr x 8 hrs= $120/day x 5 days= $600/week x 52 weeks = $31,200/year!!

Of course when this happens the poor and unskilled workers will go on Welfare, and cost American workers more to support them.

McDonald’s recently came out with their answer to those that want $15/hr pay.
Robots.

May 2011 in Europe McDonald’s hired 7,000 touch-screen cashiers.

But are they programmed to wash their "hands" after they go to the bathroom if they do?

See many vending machines lately?
They're only popular with bored people at railway stations and airports.
Most people would prefer human contact.

McDonalds will lose customers if they go down this route.

Well, they are fast food after all. I'd prefer a robot here in the usa over someone who doesn't speak a lick of english. One time, I was picking up a hamburger for my son at Wendy's. "One hamburger, ketchup, mustard, onion, tomato, lettuce, no pickle". I had to drive around to the window 3 times before they got it right.

We have this now, but not at fast food stores. We have full serve gas stations that make food inside. I walk up to a kiosk, punch in my order, take the printout to the register, pay for it and then go back and pick up my food. Pretty easy to drive into these full serve stations and get gas, order and get food, pick up a cold or hot drink (depending on the time of year) and then be on my way.

This might actually work. I always had problems with the old-style drive-throughs because of my bad hearing and their cheap speakers.

Me: "I'd like a bacon-cheeseburger, small fries and a vanilla shake, please."
Them: "Thzz ah beginshzbooger somal eyes ah baneela shok - vive foor vive, plz"

Oh, funny, Phil! And said in a bored, I-hate-this-job-but-my-parents-won't-pay-for-my-car-and you're-bothering-me voice.

If the order gets screwed up, it would be our own fault. I don't know if this would work for me cause I can't get through the self checkout counters without having to call someone.

Our Home Depot has 3 self checkout registers with one attendant, stationed nearby, to assist us old-timers...That equates to 2 less employees..

Not surprising McDonalds is headed down this path. Not many years ago you went inside a quick stop to pay for gas. Now you pay at the pump. Walmart also has self check out machines. I'm sure we will see more and more of ordering and self check out machines.

That would be me too. I head straight for the manned check out line even if there are more customers there. I figure I'm paying them to complete the job.
