Well, Is it rude for a guest who is spending the night to sleep in till anytime after 10am?

This is a loaded question as stated because the answers, as we've seen above are highly situational. What time did they arrive the night before? Are they family (yours or In Laws) or friends? Did you have joint plans for earlier in the morning?

Ask yourself if you'd rather they got up an hour before your usual wake-up time and played a radio/tv loud or banged around your kitchen (because they were hungry but 'didn't want to wake you')?

Easy enough to say, "we usually are up around 9 a.m.", to give them a hint .. or "pancakes at 9 a.m. - if you sleep late, it's cold cereal".
Perfect.

Depends on the purpose of having guests too. If you're all supposed to be going somewhere at 9 am, then sleeping until 10 is rude. If you invite the person for nighttime partying or a restful getaway, why should they get up early?

I once lived in a country where people didn't prioritize sleep. My daughter came to visit me there. Having traveled for 24 hours, she immediately went to bed.

My boss organized a welcome dinner for her. She was sleeping. My boss wanted me to come to the dinner anyway. I said no, my daughter just arrived, I have to stay with her.

I'm sure he thought we were both very rude.

Nope. They are your guests. You are supposed to make them welcome. Sleeping till 10 isn't a big deal. Although, if they were up at 5:10 AM, making breaky, they'd be truly "late" guests.
Yes, you should make them feel welcome and act like sleeping till ten was exactly what you wanted them to do. But that's the rule for the hosts.

The rule for the guests is: Don't disrupt the home you're visiting, get up when you hear them getting up or soon after.

There are 2 kinds of folks; some are right handed and others are left handed.

When it comes to sleep, well, there are 2 kinds too:

1. The Early Bird: Yap! That's me. I'm up and around 4 or 5 am. I love getting up because at that time of the day, the world is pretty quiet and I'm a "bright eyed and bushy tailed" kind of guy that really gets things done in the wee hours of the morning. Great time to read a book.

2. The Sleepy-eyed John/Jane type: These folks watch TV or stare at their smartphones until after midnight. When they "hit the sack", man, do they "hit the sack." They love to sleep in until maybe 10 or 11 am. If you get them up early, they are grouchy, miserable and aren't good for anything.

my final thoughts, they get a hotel, or when I visit them, I get a hotel.
I am not open any longer to putting anyone up overnight...

My guests can sleep as long as they like. I like being alone when I get up. I don't want to chat, do anything for anyone (except the dogs), etc. I want to read, mess around on my computer, or whatever else. Mind you, since my kids became teenagers, I've had the mornings to myself over the last 15 years or so. I like that. Now, of course, Cousin is awake when I am (very early), and he has learned that expecting me to converse is a lost cause.

I felt like it was rude when I was young and my friend invited me to stay for a week, but then she didn't get up until 3 PM, so I was just rattling around awfully bored and wondering why I was there at all. That was before the internet, now I don't think I'd have a problem with it.

@timoc - I was shocked at your plan until I realized a torch is something else to you!
