Went to the doctor today

First thing,I was not given the doctor I mad the appointment with. I made it with a PA whom I used to see at my former doc. I think they stuck me with this new guy just to see if I would complain. He was a dork and an airhead. Finally said he`s got "wedding brain"-getting married for the first time on June 20th. He`s 47. Same with his wife. 47,never married. They want to have kids-I`m assuming adopt? Anyway,he almost didn`t look at me once. Was glued to the computer and just kept typing away. Listened to my heart and lungs and squeezed my calves to make sure no pain or swelling. And that was it. My empty prescription bottles were sitting right there under his nose but he didn`t bother to ask if I needed refills. I asked if he had ordered them and he said "No-and I already closed out your chart"-(big sigh as he reopened it...) Argued with me about what kind of insulin I use-said I use short acting when I know it`s long acting. Finally said "Ooooh wait-you`re right! Sorry-wedding brain again". Hope he ordered the right one. I have two "nodules" in my breast-they show up whenever I have a mammo and I have to go back for a compression mammo and an ultrasound. Supposed to go every 6 months. I got copies of my last one so they will know if there are any changes. Oh. haven`t been for 5 years due to not having insurance. So he writes order for mammo and labs (no labs for 5 years either) and tells me to wait 8 weeks to get the labs and mammo done because he will be on his honeymoon, so make an appt. for 9 weeks from now. Really? What a joke. Going to call and ask to see the PA I originally asked to see, otherwise I will be trying to find someone else. I made this appointment over two months ago, just because it takes so long to get in anywhere.....and I knew my Medicare was kcking in June 1st.

Mrs. Robinson, what an idiot that doctor was. I also was unaware of the time delay in seeing your physician. Here, a week is average for popular doctors, several days for a less popular one.

Oh dear, that so awful, Mrs Robinson, unfortunately, this treatment, at times, isn't so rare these days even with those we've had lengthy care relationships with. I hope you get better treatment next time around or at least are switched back to the physician you were with previously.

That is terrible Mrs.Robinson but I know how you feel. I've gone thru 3 NPs in the last 2 yrs. I loved the first one and then he left without a word. I actually cried like an idiot in the drs office when I saw my new one. She was lousy, in the time she was there she didn't even listen to my heart once. Just recently she left and was replaced with my current one who I just love, she is great....kind, very thorough and understanding. I hope she doesn't leave because then I will really cry. I'd probably follow her.

One of our problems here is that doctors tend to not stay. Generally, either their wives don`t like it because there are no shopping malls and no night life or employment for THEM or in the case of female doctors,no employment for their husbands. We are a resort town. I was going to Tribal Health as they have a beautiful, brand new facility here but the doctors do not have privileges at the hospital. So if I needed to be hospitalized for something,I would be seeing a doc I had never seen before. Also, those providers kept leaving. I loved them all,so that was good, but you hate to keep having to change. And yes Shalimar-this is the result of the Healthcare Reform Act. Most who didn`t have health insurance before now do-but no one thought about training more health care providers to care for all these people...

Fighting to think we put our life in the hands of these type of doctors, wonder if he had " accidentally" given himself a shot of something?? Yes Some Doctors are prescription drug addicts!! Getting married is no excuse to not look after your patients
We Have the same problem with doctors here being a small country area 2 hours from Adelaide ,( capital of SA)
Most Dr who come here only stay a year..
I don't mean to sound racist but I just cannot understand most who come here as they don't speak very good English.I only go here locally, for diabetic check up once a year, still have my doctor in Adelaide whom I have been seeing since 1988, he still remembers what was wrong with me the first time I seen him, ( I had food poisoning)

It seems to be the same old story all around..... Everyone I know is having trouble with their doctors' offices. I'm going to be shopping for a new GP and Gyno when I get back in October (I've been seeing these ones for over 12 years, but....) The present one's staff really messed my prescriptions renewals up and then lied about it. I'll take about anything but lying. If they'll lie about that, they'll lie about anything. I can't "divorce" them until I get my latest Medicare fight resolved (or lost, as it may be) because I might need their help with the records. I figure they'll be somewhat less than enthusiastic about sending in appeals for me if they know I'm deserting the sinking ship before it reaches shore...

I'm sorry others go through these things but it does help to know one isn't alone in these types of fiascos. Recently I went through a mess with my pain doctor, tried to switch to another physician within the office. At first I was going to switch to another office altogether, but, then, I saw all the paperwork and couldn't remember all the procedures I had previously had at the present office I was going to and so I began to feel so overwhelmed, I thought, well, I'd follow the earlier advice of my primary and try switching within the same office, but, they wouldn't let me switch within, they made up an excuse. Sigh. I finally made it over to the main hospital where they keep all the past records for all my procedure with the doctors connected to that hospital, so, now I just have to go ahead and make the appointment with the new doctor's office. But at this point time is of the essence, I'm due a pain shot in my hip soon much less one in my shoulder.

I know sometimes the clients/patients can be the problem, I've been on both sides in many situations, not a physician, but as staff/patient in a variety of capacities, so, I'm not unsympathetic in certain circumstances, but these types of situations are seemingly happening much too frequently. I did have some great doctors just a couple of years ago.

Well,I called and didn`t have any problem at all booking my return appointment with the PA I had asked to book with originally. The receptionist didn`t see that anything had been changed so doesn`t know why they didn`t book me with her in the first place. Anyway, glad I get to see her after all my lab and mammo and bone density tests are done. Still have to wait til July 21st but that`s better than the 30th that he gave me. I also forgot that my hubby knows my old PA too-he has repaired her car a couple of times. His boss` wife is a nurse and works in that office so most of them do bring their cars to that shop.

I`m happy to hear that I`m not the only one experiencing these problems. I was a member of a huge HMO (Kaiser) for almost 40 years and everything was always seamless. They just never screwed up like this. Didn`t always love each and every doctor but the last ten years I was with them, they really encouraged you to choose a primary doctor and stick with them. I don`t remember any doctors ever leaving-unless they died.

Mrs. Robinson...so sorry you had to endure that idiot. He is unreal. I do not know if it is just protocol in Florida or for all Medicare patients....but, I never have my regular MD's when I am in the hospital. Even when a MD sends me to a hospital. My primary sends a nurse to check my records and tell him what is going on. But, I see all different MD's while hospitalized.

Mrs. R., I'm sorry you had to go through this but glad it appears to be resolved, although you'll still have to wait. :( I do have to wait, sometimes weeks, to see my primary care physician but can see one of her colleagues on a same day basis if necessary. Most of them are attentive and intelligent. For some ailments, I'd rather just wait to see my primary because she's been my doctor for 20+ years, we have a great rapport and I respect her. But I'm also able to communicate with her through email and sometimes that's all it takes.

I can't believe how lucky we are in Australia with our health system. I can go to any GP I choose...as long as they haven't closed their books because of too many patients. I either pay with my Medicare card or pay and then reclaim from Medicare. It's not perfect but listening to people from other countries it's pretty good.

It`s just all changed so much. No more docs in private practice anymore-they all work for big conglomerates now. And now, because of the Obamacare, you have to wait weeks to see a doctor. Well, not if it`s urgent, but sometimes you just don`t know. The only thing I`m really concerned about is my mammogram so I will just go get it now and if there`s any problem, they will call me in earlier I`m sure. I did get my old records from my last one so if they see any changes they will let them know.

Might be the same for all Medicare patients now, ndynt. Hope I never have to find out, but assuming at some point I probably will. But after just praying for the past 5 years with being uninsured that nothing would happen to me healthwise,I`m just happy to not have to worry about it anymore. My dad died of a heart attack at 65,my mom of one at 70. I will be 65 in three weeks. So I worried. And then, accidents happen,ya know? I find myself being very careful where and how I walk lol. Now I don`t have to worry so much-yay!

Well I hadn't realised that the Richard Head of my own GP practice had moved on, but it sounds like he has and you've ended up with him Mrs R...sorry about that!!..Seriously, he sounds just like The Senior GP at my surgery ..Senior...can you imagine?...he gets to be that because he's been there the longest since the other 2 real doctors retired...and the other 3 GP's who are much more professional than him and younger are subordinates...
Your description of him just staring the whole time at the computer and typing, and doing very little else..is exactly what Doctor Richard Head does., and don't you dare be the one to ask him about more than one problem regardless of how small it might be or how well within the allotted 8 minutes patient time you're allowed..because he simply won't answer, and he will insist on you making another appointment. ..but he's not stressed, at least not from overwork, but because he is universally disliked so much that he is the only one we can get an appointment to see on any day..the rest of the practice are not available from anything from 3 to 5 weeks at a time.. so petients just go to him for routine appointments..

His only saving grace is that he looks like a Male model and a bit of eye candy if you're not going into discuss anything serious, but never go and see Mr Richard Head if you need medical care because his idea of primary care is a prescription for painkillers and a push out of the door at precisely 8 minutes flat!!
