The 3rd of February 1959 became known as "The Day The Music Died" after the line of this song.Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens were killed in a plane crash that day. Don McLean dedicated the "American Pie" album to Holly.

I had the record. Heard this song so often as a teen. Had no idea what it was about.

Now it seems like you wanted a martyr, that other song, lover's cross, 10, 15 years ago or so I found out what he was singing about.
