What a sad state of affairs with the low supply of baby formula

Has anyone heard a 'reason' for this ? Is it staffing ? or a particular ingredient that is in short supply ? Surely there is no connection to the cost of oil ? Or the war in Ukraine ?

While I have a different take on the Ukraine situation, I agree that the USA needs to be truly independent in so many areas! Medical supplies, fuel, etc. etc. Our (profitable) dependence on other nations is our biggest downfall, in my opinion - and we had better learn fast.
 
I am for support to Ukraine, but feel it's outrageous that we're low on baby formula.

I'm not sure one has to do with the other, though.

Aside from breast feeding, there must be some way to make our own. Many or most of us Boomers thrived on home made formula!

I'm not even sure what Karo syrup is, but it must be high-sugar. Babies do need a lot of calories since they grow so rapidly.

Maybe some university or government lab will come up with a recipe that can be made at home.

Don't get me wrong. I think we should support Ukraine within reason. But there is pork-barrel spending galore that we need to address like the Alaskan bridge to nowhere and other appropriations that aren't putting our babies first before there are newborn casualties.
And maybe there already are? America needs to act fast.

As American mothers struggle to find baby formula on the shelves, a March report says that stockpiles of baby formula went to Ukraine.

WTVA reported that ‘Operation Ukraine‘ shipped boxes of baby formula overseas.

The Columbus, Mississippi organization, which reportedly has been helping Ukrainians for over two decades, boxed and prepared to ship over $10K worth of baby formula to Ukraine.

The US produces 98% of all formula consumed there.
The problems began last year as the COVID-19 pandemic led to disruptions in labor, transportation and raw materials — economy-wide issues that didn't spare the formula industry. Inventory was further squeezed by parents stockpiling during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Then in February, Abbott Nutrition recalled several major brands of powdered formula and shut down its Sturgis, Michigan, factory when federal officials began investigating four babies who suffered bacterial infections after consuming formula from the facility.

Abbott is one of only a handful of companies that produce the vast majority of the U.S. formula supply, so their recall wiped out a large segment of the market.

The White House also outlined measures the administration is taking to address the issue and said it was considering invoking the Defense Production Act.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) will announce new steps in the coming days regarding importing certain infant formula products from abroad, the White House said, and Biden has asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to probe reports of predatory conduct such as price gouging.

Formula shortages because of a factory being taken offline have been compounded by supply chain snags and historic inflation, leaving about 40% of baby formula products out of stock nationwide, according to data firm Datasembly.

I do not [of course] remember the receipe but my mom said she [after breast feeding] made her own formula ...... one look at me and ......... you can see it worked (y)

People in Britain are thinking exactly the same thing. We moved so many of our industries to China and India and we are responsible for their increasing wealth. They have now become a threat to us as a result.
So much about the EU was ludicrous, importing quotas of goods which we already produce ourselves. At last politicians are waking up and realising the benefits of being as self-sufficient as possible.

This is a ridiculous faux outrage. The shortage of baby formula is a serious issue that the administration is seeking to address. But at the same time, the administration cannot be faulted for following the law and providing baby formula to undocumented immigrants. Anyone who suggests this is the result of specific Biden policies, i.e., his “reckless, out-of-touch priorities,” earns Four Pinocchios."

(The former president, like the current one, are just following the law)​

? How dare they feed the bomb-victim babies and infant refugees ? Is this the reason for your apparent outrage?
 
I remember the formula that my mom made: Carnation (or Pet) evaporated canned milk, water and the afore-mentioned Karo syrup, slowly simmered in a big pot and then poured into sterilized bottles and stored in the refrigerator.

The cans had labels that you could save and redeem for items from a catalog.

My daughter was on formula, made from powdered formula and boiled water. I'd get really excited when the AFEX would have the little 4 oz already-mixed bottles that didn't need refrigeration until opened. They were extra handy for traveling, which we did a lot.

Later, when she went on milk, I fed her bottles made with powdered milk, which was a lifesaver as frequently a whole milk shipment would come in sour and it would be 3 or 4 days til a new shipment. It was hard to get a baby or toddler to drink powdered milk when they were used to regular milk, but when they didn't know any better......well......
