When I hear the word elderly I immediately think of the frail elderly and don't think of the average senior citizen, I'm not sure what the right number should be.

This is only one of many definitions for frail elderly - Older persons with medical, nutritional, cognitive, emotional, or activity impairments. These deficits may limit their ability to live independently and predispose them to illnesses and the side effects of treatment.
 

When I was young, I thought elderly was 60. Now that I'm in my 60s, I think elderly is 80. Ten years from now, if I'm still alive, I'll probably think elderly is 90. :eek:ld:

I think the same way about elderly as Aunt Bea, frail and impaired in their old age.
 
The rule of thumb is that elderly is someone 15 years older than yourself. For some of us that is age 98.

AARP says it is when you are 50.

I was taught that I should respect my elders......the problem is that I am running out of elders.
 
Ill health and being frail may or may not have anything to do with being "elderly".

I don't feel that elderly automatically equates with frail, at all.

Most of us here are elderly; it's just a word. The connotation of the word, I guess is up to the individual.

I am elderly, but not frail- yet, anyway. Some impairments? Of course, aches and pains. Things could be worse.
 
no, no, no, no (imo). Nobody is elderly until they give up...and I mean that in a good way as there comes a time when it's appropriate to let nature take it's course. And we all come to that point at a different age. But until then we're just "older". "Elderly" is not about age. It's about state of mind. My mother was 93 and never seemed elderly until her last 24 hours. Her mind was as sharp as ever and felt at peace. She had pancreatic cancer so she went quickly (5 months) and she smiled and said many times, "I'm not in pain but feel tired and I just want to be in Jesus' arms".

I'm 62 and I don't believe anyone looking at me would class me as elderly... at all.. and please god it stays that way... OTOH...what I feel inside is a complete 'nother thing...lol

Hmm, I guess I think at age 55 you become a senior citizen as far as most senior discounts go these days.
At age 65 we are seniors as far as most retirees are concerned.
I've always thought of elderly as someone 80 or older.
 
When someone gives their seat up they consider you elderly , ive had this done for me once ,and i have done it for a lady older than myself .
I have a bus pass, and i can get in for less at cinemas and other place you pay to go in , this is usually 60+. .So I guess im elderly
 
I've heard the term "frail elderly" when I took Gerontology classes and that referred to elderly who has some kind of problem that made them frail. I've always thought that elderly meant over a certain age.
 
That has been one of my biggest complaints--the word "elderly". Our newspaper uses it all the time for anyone over the age of 60. For instance, a pedestrian was hit by a car--an "elderly" women of around 65. What??? Unbelievable.

Now "old" that's different. I always told myself that once I reach the age 70, then I will be old. And I'm close to being old. But elderly? You'll have a fight with me.

ooh yes the media do that here too....it drives me nuts..

Also I hate when they write.. ''grandmother arrested for stealing somethin''.. and the story begins.. a 45 year old grandmother of 2.. etc.. jeez!!
 
Elderly is when you become limited. I mean, one is not able to do the things he/she used to do. In my case, I'm not elderly because I can keep doing all that I did before.

I bought a bicycle a year and half ago - one that was lighter, with more gears, and more "high tech". I've enjoyed it so far (even after my horrible wreck).
I still go every where I did before for the most part, such as to the beach at Myrtle in the summer, to Wintergreen Music festival, to the Planet fitness exercise room and to church every Sun.

If I had to say, I'd say that 88 is the cut-off point. After that, we are elderly, but I have about 10 years to go before then. So, in my late 70's I'm not elderly.
The secret is to enjoy life and don't worry about getting elderly. What's the point anyway?
So, I'm not elderly.
