What Are Your Annual Winter Preparations in Your Area?

It does get into the teens here, and sometimes the dripping water from the car will run down to the garage door and freeze to the garage door gasket. Can't open the garage door as a result. So a bag of salt should take care of that. Install little insulated socks that velcro on to the outdoor faucets. I should be done with leaf collection by mid-December. The red and white oaks around here hang onto their leaves until their very last gasp.

Oh, yeah, and put an ice scraper in my car. We get very little snow here (normally), but the ice storms can be a headache. Everything shuts down, schools, stores, businesses, everything.
 
The ice scraper stays in the boot of the car along with de-icer.. and gloves...

In the garden I don't have to worry about many plants the ones I do will have fleeces over them. The outside electric sockets get little protective covers over them to prevent them getting any ice into them...

When the snow melts on the roof of the barn it all drips into the barn and onto the work bench and tools.. so I have the continually covered with towels....I also have an electric dehumidifier up there in there in the barn to keep any damp at bay..

here in the Uk we generally don't have winter and summer tyres.. so there's no changing .. so we have to drive in the ice and snow on regular... so we just have to ensure our tyres are always in good condition...

As I don't garage my car I put a frost screen over the windscreen overnight, to help keep the snow off..
 

Most of the veggie garden has been cleaned out. Starting to to cut back the flowers in their beds next. One more mowing in a couple areas of the yard that has grown up. Tools, garden hoses, mowers, etc. are usually the last things stored away. Porch furniture will be going up shortly except for a couple of chairs until it's too cold to sit outside.

Wood stove/pipe was cleaned back in the late spring. We will be splitting more wood from the downed trees in a few weeks & will then stack the already seasoned wood on the front porch.

Already switched out the summer clothes for fall clothes along with a few light weight jackets for now. Heavy coats will come out at the last minute with the boots.

For the vehicles, the sun screens have been put up & the snow scrapers will go in closer to the snow time.

Don't feel silly! :) Highway driving can be quite scary here, so I try to avoid traveling any sort of long distance in the winter. The weather service also recommends that if you must leave your vehicle for any reason to tie yourself to it with a rope because the visibility can get so bad. The snow here is very light, but when the winds are strong enough—and they usually are—visibility can get to near-zero very quickly.

Interesting, I have read of blinding snowfalls in history books but didn't think of them being in the here and now. I watched a show about Alaska truckers and it was terrifying! I have zero desire to be on such roads in bad weather. :eek:
 
No longer have to worry about it. Live in a co-op where all the maintenance is handled by contractors management hires. I no longer have a car. I hope our city has sufficient salt and trucks to do what needs to be done when it snows or is icy. But during those times, I stay in the house.
 
the usual stuff for car and ice melt crystals for the back porch steps so the dogs
can get in and out in case of ice. Throw blankets come out of hiding for the
living room too
 
I live just north of what I call “Georida” (you can’t tell whether you’re still in GA or if you’ve gotten to Florida 😋). Not much winter prep here.

Had a couple cold spells (with an inch or two of snow that actually stuck around 2-3 days— unheard of!!).

We insulated the outdoor spigots and dripped the water in the indoor faucets at night. That’s about the extent of it
 
We drip the faucets if it gets cold enough. Otherwise, it's just fall clean-up here. Last winter it snowed 1/2". I spent 30-something years in the Frozen North. I hate snow with a fervent passion.
 
Not much I have to do personally because I live in a co-op and the grounds and parking lot are automatically taken care of. I just hope my son puts the plastic covers over the air conditioners that he purchased last year and never used. As far as our city...they best make sure to have enough salts, salt trucks and workers.

1/. Have the central heating serviced.

2/. Put winter curtains up.

3/. Root out all my warm winter clothes.

4/. Make sure the larder is well stocked.

5/. Hang the sign outside my front door saying, "Come back in April next year." 😊
