What are your musical tastes?

I delight in genres that make people raise an eyebrow and think What???
If it has a story makes it more interesting to me. Maybe that is why I love
Sea Shanty songs, stories of times long ago about things I never had to endure.
Songs that I grew up hearing because ancestors passed them down.
I can learn about a culture and hear in their music that we are all just concerned
with the same issues that give us happiness or make us sad.
Music can Unite others in many ways.

One can predict on this music thread beyond this first page, that numbers of members will just start posting more YouTube music video links with little to none associated text, page after page, that no to few others will write follow-up posts about. The board already has several active music threads and that is about all one ever sees because OP are so broadly posed. So a more interesting question is,

"Why do so many SF members feel compelled to post all these tersely described music links on any music thread as though they are promoting exposure of their favorite bands?" I'd love to read a post of at least a paragraph to page length on why they like or don't like whatever. I could easily write a lot about specific albums or songs if tasked. I'm sure some members do actually view such posted music links, but I'd bet most rarely do. So a second question is, "How often do you view music links posted by others?"

The new members want to share their personality...music is almost always involved. :)

I tend towards enjoying alternative and indie pop and rock but like a broad range of genres beyond that. I strongly prefer female vocals and female artists, all female bands or female lead bands. I love harmonies. I love having strings (cellos or violins mainly) in the music. I also love dual female male vocals and harmonies.

I've found that I love more music from the last 20 years than in the years prior to that. I've gotten tired of and no longer enjoy most of the stuff I was listening to in my teens and early twenties. The only artists I still love most everything from that era are The Beatles, Alice Cooper (the band not the solo artist) and Devo. Other than that I still like some single songs from artists from that era.

I usually listen to at least 25 or so albums from the current year before the year's end. I make a list of my favorite artists from the year and post it on another website. I forget whether or not it's OK to mention other sites on this forum so I won't mention it here bit if you want a lot of information about my musical tastes you can PM me for the site or if someone say's it's OK to post it here I'll do so after I see such a reply.

As an exercise I've going through my favorite five star songs from almost 300 artists and come up with a list of my favorite 100 songs of all time (one per artist) in order. I also have lists of my favorite artists in order.

Many of my favorite artists are very obscure and most people don't know them. I don't go out of my way to find obscure artists it's just that the way I find music tends to take me in that direction.

One big yearly driver for finding new artists is a free three day festival in San Francisco called Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. They have over 70 artists playing over three days on four or six stages depending on the day. They start posting the artists who will be playing a little over a month before the festival and I make sure I listen to at least three songs from all of the ones I haven't heard of before. I've found some very enjoyable artists that way.

I also love live music so when I see an artist I like I'll often see bands or artists I haven't heard or heard of before.

There are some really popular bands that I just don't get the appeal of. The Foo Fighters comes to mind. I've tried on several occasions to listen to their music and it just sound like noise to me.

Maybe the music says it all. "Sunday Morning Coming Down" express more when I'm in sorrowful mood than my own words can. "Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water" describes how we all need each other, while "Help Me Through the Night" express the pain of needing a shoulder to rest on. I used to listen to 59th St. Bridge Street song on my way to work but was criticized for being too happy at the start of a new day. When I have the time now I like to view the links but my life doesn't revolve around my computer.

I really like much of the new stuff. This kind of started when I was starting over in the 90’s. I found that listening to the lyrics made me happy and sometimes laugh. Now I listen to a Spanish station occasionally…love the beat and try to understand the lyrics. About the worst music for me is jazz or heavy metal.

Well, judging from the responses so far the thread has opened up some interesting conversation. I like to connect with others that enjoy music and why they enjoy what they do. As I said in the OP I enjoy many artists and genres. I also respect artists that I myself have little interest in. For example, take 'Lady Gaga'. I don't listen to her music, but from what I hear in her voice she is incredibly talented.
Also, if one was to judge strictly from the OP, would one believe that I also listen to Neil Diamond (I've seen him three times), Motown, or Johnny Cash? Probably not, but I do. And I do because it's authentic music from incredibly talented artists

Quite often. I never know what might just grab my attention

I once attended a bi-lingual church that sang worship songs in English and Spanish. Since the words were on screen I tried to sing along the best I could :D
That was fun

I'm no different to most people in that I like what I like... and I don't like heavy metal, Rap, Punk, .. Traditional jazz or Opera

I really enjoy all Motown..not necessarily all soul.... Swing Jazz..... Gospel if it's upbeat.... .. almost all music from the mid 50's through to the mid 70's... ad of course my beloved Gaelic music, Both Scottish & Irish

I enjoy all forms of Rock N Roll, Classic R&B\Soul\Motown, Outlaw Country, Blues, Gospel, Folk, Jazz, Brian Eno type Ambient, Classical and some other obscure stuff I don't know what to call.

1950's & 1960's American rock and roll, 1960's British rock and roll, Motown, Doo Wop, Folk music from the 1950's & 1960's, Broadway show tunes from 1950's and 1960's musicals. 1970's music (except Disco), Instrumentals (50's & 60's). There were some little remembered people from 1980's music that I liked enough to buy their albums (Miki Howard, View From the Hill, Toni Childs, Tanita Tikaram, Brenda Russell, Culture Club), the rest of 80's music, & all music that came after that never interested me.

Off the top of my head, but not necessarily listed in order of preference:

70s & 80s music, especially soulful sounds (and some from 60s)
country (prefer older style esp. with steel guitar sounds)
gospel (structured hymns instead of contemporary wandering, aimless "tunes" with reptitive choruses)
classical
soft adult contemporary
light jazz

What I listen to is highly mood dependent. If I'm feeling low, I can't handle anything nostalgic for very long.
