What Climate Change Has Done to the Polar Bear

This video has garnered a huge amount of interest in the Internet. However, like many things, on the Net, this particular incident may not be truly accurate. Several experts who have researched this video have come to the conclusion that this is a very old bear, suffering normal end of life illness and issues.

However, there is an increased risk for these magnificent animals as their normal ice bound hunts for seals are being threatened by the warming Arctic. Perhaps if humans paid more attention to what is happening in Nature, they might have a better understanding of what humanity, itself, may face in coming decades.

The natives of the area monitoring the bear say they are not surprised.

Now notice. The video is taken in the summer and is being touted as a result of climate change.

Honestly. I am such a skeptic on that matter.

I live on the shore of Lake Superior.

We have a University in town that does research on Polar Bears.

They say not only are the bears surviving, they are thriving.

The problem is that the polar bear was the poster boy for the global warming and the climate change or whatever they want to call it.

The ice declining is based on computer models. There is no empirical evidence according to those who live there.

“And for us, living up in the north, where 365 days a year – you know, climate has been evolving over a number of years, bears have been around for hundreds of thousands of years and they’ve gone through various cycles of climate change,” echoed Gabriel Nirlungayuk, the Deputy Minister of the Environment in Nunavut.

“But in my lifetime, anyhow, we haven’t – I have yet to see declining of polar bears, of climate change,” Gabriel told the Roy Green Show. “And one is Western Hudson Bay, which was projected to be in decline 20 years ago – up to now, it should be less than 300 bears but we’re seeing that the numbers have not really changed.”

I'll say it again here, as I do in all these discussions.......The earth is ever changing , because it is not through developing . It will continue to change long, long after we are dead. We can't stop it, and i seriously doubt we have much [if any] influence on it.

Just an opinion but...I think once it is through developing...it will burn out. Which might explain all the other planets?.

Personally, I don't think Mother Earth cares one whit about what mankind does. We've had dozens of ice ages and cycles of global warming. The planet has seen the rise and fall of thousands of species, and mankind is no exception. Perhaps when we are gone, another more intelligent species will evolve.

It seems as though those who "refute" climate change always fall back on the fact that the earth has gone through many ice ages and periods of warming. They are Quite Correct....but the thing they overlook is that in the past there weren't billions of humans on the planet, and trillions of dollars of oceanside cities and infrastructure that exist today....which will face major problems if/when the planet warms a few more degrees. The scientists who study this phenomenon say that in a worst case scenario, the U.S. could lose as much as 17% of its low lying landmass, and as many as 200 billion people could be displaced 100+ years from now. The Gulf Coast, most of Florida, and much of the Eastern seaboard will be flooded if the scientists are correct. Can you imagine the chaos, and destruction of society that would occur under such conditions????

"if the scientists are correct."

Is a big statement.

And, should we not use the earth? Inhabit the earth ? Should we not progress ? We didn't know 100 yrs ago, what we do now...we do not know now...what we will 100 years from now.

The thing about so-called global warming that no-one seems to take into account is that there are many dozens of countries that live quite well with a temperature much higher that of the U.S, U.K., Europe, much of Asia, including Japan. Brazil, Kenya, The Congo, Indonesia, Borneo, and New Guinea lie astride the equator and they seem to thrive quite well with a temperature much, much higher than the U.S. These latter listed countries grow their crops, live their lives and produce children. If it should come about that we can grow mangoes and bananas in Tennessee, what does it matter ?
Additionally, I recently heard a global warming "scientist" state that "Global warming could cause a new ice-age" I wish they would make up their minds. Either warmer or colder. Which is it supposed to be ?
Personally. I believe that there is a political motivation behind the whole "sky is falling" theory

What IS disgraceful is what is happening to this POOR bear!! Regardless of why this bear is suffering, I think someone should help it!

I think it's disgraceful. One bear to represent climate change?

Animals are clever. They just follow humans. We throw away plenty.
That is what the topic said so I posted it. One bear should be helped and for the reasons the video represents!!

And do you care about the BEAR?

This video is 3 days ago from when I posted it!! Help the bear.

TRAGEDY PORN, fake news to push an agenda. That video was taken in AUGUST by somebody who did these manipulation videos before and he admitted that he had no proof the condition of the bear had anything to do with global warming. They put out these videos for ONE purpose and that's to get the reactions they got from people just like in this thread so they give them money and that's why you see it in December. The bear was old and sick. The video speed was slowed down to make it look more pathetic. Nobody likes to see any animal get old and sick and starve but guess what, it happens all the time in the wild. The camera man admitted he saw a lot of fat and healthy bears right before he taped this one last summer. If he really gave a damn about the bear he would contact the authorities to have it put down quick.

Help the bear ? How ? Perhaps, if the bear is that far gone, the kindest thing to do is to put the bear down.
Is that what you'd like someone to do with you when you're old and arthritic but perfectly happy with life?

Bears and other animals eat garbage whenever they can. That includes plenty of strong healthy animals. It tastes good and it doesn't try to run away.

Finally, all I will say is that I believe the story in the video is true. When people don't like the truth they make up things. I think someone should help that poor poor polar bear if it is even still alive. That was the main point I make.

I agree with you. I wish that we could get that polar bear to a vet for help since we have no idea what the problem is. I wish that we could help the millions of pets who need, but don't receive medical care. I came to the conclusion years ago to help them one at a time and contribute to organizations who share my philosophy. I can at least help a few.

Since your avatar has a picture of a dog, I assume that he is yours. Can you bring in another animal? You don't need to have another dog. A cat, a rabbit, or even a mouse would help.

I'm frustrated too, but I have no better answer.

It's always a bit sad to see an animal suffering as it nears it's end of life. We live in the deep forest, and I have seen many such incidents over the years. However, that is the "cycle" of nature, and there aren't many animal hospitals or vets roaming the boondocks trying to keep these critters alive, artificially...instead, the buzzards circling overhead generally serve to signal the "final chapter". I watched a local female deer limp around with a broken and deformed front leg for about 3 years, before she finally succumbed to her fate.
In some respects, I think nature is kinder to its own than humans are to other humans. I have seen several cases of someone terminally ill, and being kept alive for months, and even years, while they suffer and have to live on pain pills. It would almost be a blessing for those folks to have access to the policies advocated by Dr. Kevorkian. Death is part of the cycle of life, and we all have to accept that fact.

I've read that the Polar Bear is the strongest, hardiest, most self-sufficient mammal on the face of the Earth.

They can swim for many miles in frigid waters, because they have a thick layer of insulating fat and have webbed paws. They are Man-Eaters, and the only defense for life protection is a Weatherby .460 Magnum Rifle. They can go for an extended time without food and water, and can consume a 50-pound seal pup at a sitting.

You don't have to feel sorry for the sturdy Polar Bear...he is the most fearsome and powerful predator in the Arctic!

It is true but it is what happens in nature. Everything alive dies and polar bears are no exception.

How do you think they die eventually if not killed? Heart attack.

This video is so unrealistic.

Big article on this same thing in the current issue of The National Geographic magazine.

Don't go by National Geographic . I cancelled my subscription when they posted their cover with a picture of the Statue of Liberty up to her waist in water.

I can't stand it when a magazine takes a stand, like global warming.

Scientific journals should stay out of politics and remain neutral.
