What did you learn by rote at school

that is no longer relevant to you?
I learnt
"Our Father, who art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done
on Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory
Forever and ever
Amen"

We had to say that one plus; "I pledge allegiance to the flag and to the Queen and Country for which it stands.
One nation under God with liberty and justice for all."

Frankly, most of us just mumbled the words as the poor sucker who was chosen to do the morning announcement over the PA system repeated the Lord's prayer & the Pledge of Alligance which was piped into every classroom. The odd time that person would screw it up and that provided much hilarity to the rest of us! That was always a great way to start the day 😂🤣

We always had to stand to attention in the school yard, all classes in their proper lines, then the music started, "The Colonel Bogie March, or the Dam Busters, or we'd do the Hitler Song to the tune of Colonel Bogey, when the Nuns weren't around.

"Hitler, he only had one b*ll,
Goring had two, but very small,
Himmler had something similar,
But poor old Goebbels had no b*lls at all."
It brought great laughter, not bad for a Catholic Girl's School, eh?

Well, several things -- but they are still relevant even 8 decades later.
i before e, except after c
or when sounded as 'a' as in neighbor or weigh

The Pledge of Allegiance, although i remember when President Eisenhower added in "under God".
We had learned "and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible . . . "
The next year we went back to the next grade and it was "one Nation, under God, indivisible . . ."
For a little bit, that was actually a little confusing to a 6-year-old :)

Multiplication tables. We had to learn those 'by rote'.
Although that came in handy when i was tutoring kids.
Just explained to them that multiplication is simply a short-hand way of adding :)

I remember 2 poems ever since elementary school.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Days
By Karle Wilson Baker

Some days my thoughts are just cocoons- all cold, and dull and blind,
They hang from dripping branches in the grey woods of my mind;

And other days they drift and shine - such free and flying things!
I find the gold-dust in my hair, left by their brushing wings.

Rabbie Burns Poetry....

musical songs which went along with ball and skipping games.....In fact we kids were always singing while we played, we don't hear that today....

''A sailor went to sea sea sea to see what he could see see see and all that he could see see see was the bottom of the deep blue sea sea sea''

..another... ..at 8 or 9 years old we didn't know who these people were but we sang the song over and over as we skipped..

My name is Shirley Temple
And I've got curly hair
I've got dimples and wear my skirts to there (gesture to indicate very short)
Got legs like Betty Grable
A figure like Marilyn Monroe
Got hair like Ginger Rogers
and a face like an elephant's toe!"

we sang that too.. being soon after the end of the war.. those types of songs were everywhere.... ours had a little different words in Scotland... but essentially the same song.....we were singing this from about the age of 6 at school...:ROFLMAO:

Sung to the tune of Colonel Bogey March....

Hitler has only got one ball,

The other is on the kitchen wall,

His mother, the dirty bugger,

Served it up for their supper!

or
Hitler has only got one ball,

Goebbels has no balls at all

Himmlers mother the dirty bugger

Served it up to them for their supper!

We entered class in 5th grade in a row to Yankee Doodle Dandy and all of us sang.

The pledge of allegiance in all grades at beginning of class standing.

And of course multiplication tables and alphabet.
