What Didn't You Buy And Why Not?

Could you borrow a step ladder from a neighbor or landlord? Are you planning to stay in that apartment for several years? If so, the convenience of the shelving might be justifiable.

Glad you found the wax!
Yes, I can borrow a step ladder from a neighbor -- if it's the right size, etc. The borrowing part is daunting!

Spending money on shelving might be justified. The storage room is still functional, but the inefficiency and lack of organization is mildly annoying. Then I could move the current (low) shelf to the living room, where it would be handy. Thanks!

From the returns queue in UK clothes stores, it seems most shoppers buy things they don't want. Me included.

I didn’t buy a beige or tan t-shirt or top because I can’t find one. There’s nothing neutral besides black or white.

I went to visit a friend in Vermont last summer for a long weekend. There isn’t a whole lot to do there, but I saw a billboard for a flea market just up the road from where we were at the time. I asked my friend if we could stop in and just wander through for the heck of it.

It was actually a pretty large flea market. Near the end of the market, I found a big picture of James Dean. I think it was something like 24”x20”. This picture looked real. It appeared to me like James Dean himself sat for the painting. It showed him with a cigarette in his mouth playing pool. Sal Mineo was in the background, but was much smaller than Dean’s picture. It had a price tag on it for $85. I couldn’t quit thinking of this picture, so before we left, I walked up to the man who had the stand and asked him if he would take $50 for it. At first he said no way and he began to walk away when he stopped and turned around and said he would take $70. I was hesitant, but I thought what the heck and I bought it. The whole painting was in black and white.

When I got the picture home, I examined it more carefully and saw that it had some smudges and a few other defects on it. I took it to a friend of mine back home who was taking lessons at a nearby art class. I asked him if he would mind showing it to his teacher and he agreed to do that at the next lesson. The teacher called me and asked how I got it and so on and he finally told me that the picture was an original that has been lost for several years. It was originally painted by an artist who I forget, but the picture is valuable. It ended up being shown around, but actually it was just a picture of the picture, but anyway, I was offered $12,000.00 for the picture. I had no idea what I had or it’s value.

I ended up donating it to a local charity that the newspaper sponsors each year and they sold it and got $14,000.00. The proceeds are used to feed the homeless, who I support on holidays by helping to serve the homeless. We do this on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Many of our homeless are drug addicts or are mentally impaired, but that doesn’t matter to me. I talk to as many as I can and try to get them into a rehab. I keep wishing I had that picture. It was almist real when you looked at it.

That is a cool story!

So the other day I decided to get a quote for some white Venetian blinds for my son's room.
He has two windows in there and they are not very big and they certainly don't go all the way to the floor.

The guy came over and measured it all up then gave me his price, $1720. plus $87 GST.

Nope not happening, I have ordered the blinds online for a total of $450 which includes shipping and insurance. I will install them myself.

A woman that lives here in our development was telling some of us about the time she went to visit her sister in Wyoming, Montana or somewhere in that area and they went to a flea market. They were with their husbands and decided to split up an do their separate ways. The woman went to look at the clothing, etc., and the men went to look at other junk.

The one woman found a locket at a stand that had all kinds if cheap jewelry and so forth. She asked the lady how much she wanted for it and the lady told her that the chain was real 14 kt. gold, so she thought $125 would be fair. She tried to deal with her, but the woman held fast at $125, so she finally gave in.

She tried to open the locket, but no luck. She took it to a jeweler in her town and no luck with opening it. He asked the woman if she would mind if he sent it to a jeweler’s friend of his and let him try. She gave him the go ahead. A few weeks later, he called and got the lady’s phone number and spoke to her on the phone and told her they were able to open the locket.

He told her the locket had a picture of Napoleon on the front and a picture of Josephine inside. He valued the locket at over a half million dollars, but said it should be sold at Christie’s or Sotheby’s. She wouldn’t finish the story, so we have no idea how much it brought or if she even sold it.

Brunch buffet at Wynn's. I watched a video that explains the food stations. I wasn't impressed with the menu. @$49.95 each plus tax & tip I would expect something a whole lot better than N Y strip steak as the top item on the menu.

I got to thinking about this and her story, so she only lives a block away and I walked over to her house and asked her if she ever found out if the lady sold the locket or not. She said yes, she did sell it at one of the more exclusive auctions, but the woman who owned the locket would not reveal how much she got for it, but it must have been quite a bit. Her husband was there and he added that the auction house directly deposited the money into her bank account so she wouldn’t be carrying any cash or check on her. They took her to the airport in a limo. She said they live in the Hampton now. That was about 6 or 7 years ago. I keep trying and hoping I can find my picture or her locket on the Internet, but no luck.

A well...

I had plans to drill a well to replace our inefficient flood irrigation from the canal. Money all set aside, talked to a driller, all was ready.... Then when applying for the permit I discovered the governor has issued a ban on any new groundwater rights applications, so likely I can't.

I have water rights to the canal water, in the past they have let you do an exchange, but apparently no more. Can't even do the exchange... Makes no sense at all, well water is much more efficient than canal water, I'd use about half of what I am using now. I pointed this out to the state water engineer, he agreed but said there was nothing that could be done...

Leave it to the government to not take the finer points into consideration...
