upstate New York
I know strange topic. As a native up-state New Yorker I carry kind of a chip on my shoulder. People just make the assumption that NY is a city. What do you know about my state?

Hi Robusta, where in upstate NY do you live? I was born/raised and still live in hometown Buffalo. What I know about our state,we have 3 pro football teams,NYGiants,NY Jets and the terrible Bflo Bills{don't watch/follow any of them},3 pro hockey teams,NYRangers,NY Islanders, Buflo Sabres{ditto about them too}. My favorite season is autumn. In winter around WNY you may get a lot of snow, depending on how close you live to Lake Erie. The past 2 seasons we didn't get much snow here in the city. Albany is state capital Sue

I was born and raised in Central New York.

I like the odd bits of history like the Scythe Tree, Cardiff Giant, The White Woman of the Genesee, etc...

A fella named Arch Merrill captured several of the stories and published them in a series of books about Central New York.

I went to NY only once in my life and that was when a bunch of us college kids went on a Thanksgiving weekend just for fun.

We toured Radio City, saw the Rockettes , rode the ferry and ate lox and cream cheese, saw a wide screen movie (The Brothers Grimm), and one of the guys who lived there, showed us around and also some spots where West Side Story, the movie, were made. The year was 1961, and what a wild weekend that was! I haven't been back since, but I've always wanted to. I also saw the ocean, and believe it or not, that was the first time for me. Gosh, I was just a kid.

OK exwisehe, that is just what I was talking about. You did not go to New York, you went to New York City. The city is a tiny corner of the state. Their is really nothing about the city that relates to upstate at all.

I live in the Finger Lakes Region. It is close to a five hour drive to NYC, I have been there 3 or 4 times, have no real reason to return.

My parents were from the Buffalo/ Niagara Falls area and I still have relatives there.

One, A great Uncle had an 800 acre farm in the Sanborn/Pekin area. As a kid, I spent my summers there.

After WWII, As an ex USAF pilot, I rented a Piper Cub and flew it over the Niagara Falls at 300 feet.

Almost got the windshield wet.

Nothing...I know nothing about New York State at all...apart from it has new York city in it..and it was named after the 17th-century Duke of York who became James the 11 of England

I have a friend who lives in New jersey and another who lives in Connecticut...and I think they're quite close...

My daughter has visited NY city a couple of times, I have lots of photos of it..the usual tourist places etc...but as far as New York State I know almost zilch

I've heard upstaters are a tad touchy on this subject, but geez..!

The 'argument' about what constitutes upstate, downstate, etc. etc., has been going on all my lifetime, and probably before.
so where are you from.jpg

But if ya really want to wig, I have a using-the-term-loosely neighbor who believed the entirety of NY is one place: The Bronx!!!

I know that the airports in New York City and Newark are in bad need of an update. Most airports here in the U.S. need some updating, but NYC airports are just plain bad. The ATC's are great. I don't know how they move as many flights per day as they do.

Vineyards and wine, dairy farms near Corning, Corningware , Bear Mountain, West Point Military Academy, apples, Hudson River, Oneida Nation, Catskill Mountains and resorts, Adirondack Mountains and Parks, Rip Van Winkle......

Born in Brooklyn, NY. Raised in Staten Island NY.
Moved to Unadilla NY,in 1993,kids grew up,hubby passed away,I live in a tiny town 40 miles south of utica.
The not good points, crowds, insanity, driving in constant traffic, sitting on traffic jams, dirty, noisy.
The good points, best pizza anywhere, best Chinese food, bagels and rolls that are crispy.
24 hour convenience stores!

My son graduated from West Point way back in the 80s, so I made more trips (from Ohio) than I can count to see him. Made a few trips to the City, but usually stayed close to the Academy. He claimed that everywhere they had to march was uphill both ways.....

My wife and I did spend a long weekend at Chautaugua, which is just about as far as you can get from NYC and still be in the same state.

That's it for me! :)

When I was working, I went to the company school in Kingston, NY, on several occasions. I kind of liked that area, and also another town called New Paltz. If I was going to be there over a weekend, I liked to get up early on a Sunday morning, and go to NYC real early for some sightseeing. NYC was very quite, and easy to get around in on Sunday mornings. However, about noon, it seemed like someone opened a gate, and the city quickly became flooded with people and traffic....which was my cue to head back North.

One of my saddest memories was being on top of the WTC North tower just a couple of weeks after they finished making the King Kong movie...the cranes, etc., were still on the South tower. Then, on 9/11, when I watched the towers come down, I was almost sickened.

I've been to New York City, Buffalo, Niagara Falls NY, Plattsburgh, Saratoga Springs, Albany and Lake Placid. Liked them all.

I've eaten pie at the Noon Mark Diner.....that was the highlight.

Don't care a hoot for your toll roads. We drove the New York Thruway from Buffalo to somewhere near Albany pulling the RV. It cost us almost $55 and was the worst road I've ever had the privilege to have to pay to drive on.

West Point / Bear Mountain was the furthest north I ever went in NY. I thought I'd need a sled and dog team.

Oh, wait, no - went to the Catskills once, after it became a ghost town. Sad.

Born and raised in Yonkers, a stone's throw from NYC. Moved to Greenwich Village when I was 17, stayed there 7 years. As Giantsfan said, the best pizza, bagels and 24/7 stores.

So yeah, I'm one of those people who think "NY" means Westchester County and lower. :playful:

Wouldn't want to go back, though. It's changed too much. Mostly for the worse.

Had a great dinner once at Windows On The World. I know what you mean.

Was that the Cardiff Giant at the Farmers Museum?

Yup!

The city is a great place to visit but I could never live there. I have close relatives that live in upper state N. Y. Have visited often and have transited the state several times on my way to the Canadian Maritimes. Beautiful state but I would find the winters difficult.

It depends on what part of NY are you talking about. There's the "city", which is Manhattan. Then there's the 'city', which consist of the Burrows, Queens, etc. If you are in 1 of 5 parts of NYC, the "city" is Manhattan. If you are outside the 5 parts of NYC, then those 5 parts are the 'city'. Then there's NYC It's an area about 100 miles from the'city'(meaning all the Burrows.), which consists of bedroom communities, all squished up against one another. It sounds confusing, until you live there, then it makes complete sense. Then there's Upstate, which consists of some of the most beautiful panoramic vistas you can see. There's different "Upstates", but I'm a 'city' person, so I don't know them well. Upstate is the exact opposite of Manhattan

I would love to visit the Courtland area, where my ancestors are from and walked the earth there, also have many buried there..

I live in Rochester. I have many who do not know the geography of the state (shame on them) exclaim...wow I'll bet you go into the city all the time. Uh..no. I live 8 hours away, and have not been there since the 80's
