What do you think about the $300million baseball player contracts?

Here is how I look at it. There are only a select few that can play a game at the level these players play the game at so they do deserve a pretty decent salary as not very many people can do what they do. On the other hand, it is a game they are playing that entertains people. This to me is no where near as important as say what a doctor or surgeon does, which they do get a nice salary but not $300 million dollars. It is also nowhere near as important as what a Nurse does or what I did my entire career as a Teacher and the professions definitely don't get that sort of money. So, I do think they should be compensated for a good salary, but not that ridiculous amount. The same goes for A List Actors who make a ridiculous amount of money on a movie or TV series.

Properly invested that should assure a financial worry free retirement when the player is unable to play anymore.
Don't blame the player asking for & getting that amount. It's people (fans) that are willing to pay for tickets to watch games that pays for the asking salary. Not taxes.

My thoughts exactly. Sports = money for entire communities, not just the players, coaches, managers and owners.

A new sports arena is going to be built in South Sacramento within the next 2 or 3 years. That's where my old apartment is, and right now it's a very depressed, crime-ridden, unsafe area where businesses of any kind are few and far between. That will all change when that new arena is finished.

I thought the stands at baseball games were often empty. And they’re trying to find ways to speed the game up. Doesn’t seem to be the demand until the finals. I’m basing my opinion of sports news on tv.

Other sports can fill the stands, it seems easier.

Do they deserve a huge salary, yes. Should it be as high as it is, no. Same with actors.

My impression has been that the owners make such extreme amounts, from their investment, while the players know that the fans pay to see them, and fans pay to buy merchandise because of them, and they buy all the concessions, while there to see them.

And the athletes are the ones who have injuries and risk even greater injuries.

So it's hard for me to fault the players for wanting bigger slices of that enormous pie.

But I agree that the salaries are ridiculous, and that the prices the fans pay, could come way down, even if it lowers the extreme profits of both the owners and the players.

To take a family or some children for a few hours of fun, at a public event like a baseball game, in my opinion, should not be as expensive as it is.
It is not just the ticket prices, for all seats other than full hot sun and very distant from the field; but also the costs of the food there and souvenirs. The one day total spent is a hardship for many locals' monthly budgets.

Even decades ago, to take 2 children to the game, once or twice a summer, would cost me a large amount of money.
In addition, we had to sneak in some foods for the children and ourselves, in order not to have to buy every single thing there at the ballpark, at those prices.

I don't blame the food vendors, of course, for wanting their share of the pie, as well;
but I think some of the monies that are going to the owners and the players, could pay the vendors in part, for those items bought there, and bring the overall costs down, of those who'd like to attend.

Just my ideas on the subject.
I am no expert on the subject, I admit.

Well at least they actually do something ... as opposed to actors/TV personalities . Which are close to useless IMO.

It doesn't really matter too me as I never buy a ticket [which is where their money comes from] to attend games, and over the years, have spent little on movies.

Would not happen unless those paying for tickets, tv packages, souvenirs etc continue to pay the exorbitant prices charged for all of those things.

Should add that gambling has played a big roll in shaping professional sports as we see it today because of all the associated money it brings to these sports. That includes legal and illegal betting on it

For how many years? What is the annual salary?

I don't get the comparison to teachers, daycare workers or even doctors. How many companies are willing to buy ads on TV ($1 million+ for 30 secs.) when these workers are going about their very important daily duties?

**Yankees Aaron Judge has a contract for $340 million over 9 years. That's only $40 million annually.

**The late Rush Limbaugh earned $68 million annually for spewing hate while sitting on his oversized rear end. Compared to sports players, he had no chance of sustaining a CTE or career ending injury.

**Kelly Ripa (Live with Kelly & Mark) earns $20 million+ a year for telling jokes and reading emails for 45 minutes/5 days a week while sitting on her small rear end. 😉 She doesn't put her body on the line like sports players!

**Nick Saban is the highest paid state government employee earning $12 million a year. His assistants make a lot of money too.. None are exposed to CTE or career ending injuries like the 18 to 22 year olds who are doing the entertaining.

Bottom line: The players in any sport should get whatever the market dictates. Furthermore, most of the money generated to pay sports players comes from media and company contracts.

The NY Yankees are worth 6 billion US dollars and the avg MLB franchise is over 2 billion. Why shouldn't the players get as much as they can? Every other entity involved, like the owners, tv networks, cable company, parking lot owners, right down to the cracker jack supplier is trying to maximize their earnings, it's only fair.

For $300million, a player better hit a homer every time he's up at bat. I'm sorry, I think that salary is obscene. I don't blame a guy for asking for it, I do blame the jackasses who are paying it.
Choose your poison: The owners and players get to share the income equitably or the owners get a lion's share. Why favor the owners over the players? Why envy income earned? On game day, the owners get to sit royally in a suite while the players put their bodies on the line.

"As revenue from tickets and premium seating increases, MLB posted an overall income of $10.3 billion in 2022, the most ever. Leading the way with the highest profit in the league was the Seattle Mariners with $83.8 million."

Just last week in the NFL, the ex-owner of the Washington Commanders accepted $6 billion when he sold the team. He bought it in 1999 for $800 million. What a payday!

Even the fans who pay $25 for a $5 tee shirt with a team logo on it? Or pay 50 dollars for a regular season ticket? Or pay $100 for tv sports package? Or the cities that pay for these millionaire playgrounds/stadiums?
