Having worked in offices most of my life, I've been exposed to all kinds of perfumes & colognes of co-workers. Back in the 60s and 70s, men (me too) doused themselves with all kinds of stuff to the point it was overpowering. Today, I rarely use anything (other than soap) but at times will put a drop or two of Joop on.
In the late '90s, my office was next to a woman who was pretty "well to do" and gave the aura of "high class". Well, she wore a scent that to me was just overpowering and foul smelling. One day the opportunity came up and I mentioned that I seemed to be "allergic" to it. She said, "Bill, you have no idea how much this cost". I apologize, but I forgot the name of the product. Thankfully, she no longer used it everyday.
Another story, back in the mid '70s I worked in a refinery office in Joliet, Illinois. It was the open concept, and the young woman who sat not far from me often had a not so nice perfume on. She too was well dressed and "had money". One day a co-worker enlightened me.... what I was smelling was her B.O. and she just needed a bath!
Lastly, it seems that the bigger / older the woman, there is a tendency to put more perfume on than necessary. Its no fun when then are nearby at a restaurant as it can be over powering. I understand that some older folks have a lessened sense of smell, but still....
That said, there are some odors that I really love - like lilacs, or Windsong, and a few of the natural scents that are long gone.
