What has to happen for you to be able to fall asleep?

I don't rest well w/o ms gamboogal next to me.

That is one reason we went Permanent Married Accompanied Resident basis overseas in 2008 as I was tired of being apart while rotating 28/28.
We are fortunate that I don't have to take work away from her anymore.

We like the room dark, but will use eye mask or bandanna to cover eyes if too much light.
We also like to have a fan or ceiling fan and have the air moving. ms gamboolgal likes the room downright cold

After chasing ms gamboolgal around the the old 4 poster buck nekid and sometimes catching her.....I have no problem falling asleep.
I hold her tight every night. After 38 years you can't get a knife blade between us without cutting both of us.

We still sleep nekid and I still can't never get enuff of her.

Like some others, pillow has to be so so, either up late till sleepy, or read until I am.

I got to get comfy, on my side, with a pillow between my legs. I have to stop "thinking". Otherwise, I'll just lie in bed for hours, thinking about whatever. With my eyes closed, and NOT thinking, I'll eventually see a spot of light. It gets bigger, and in its place, I begin to see things - some object or other. That's when I know I'm falling asleep, Then I'm out. When I'm asleep, I'm comatose-out like a light. Normal alarm clocks won't wake me up. I have one, where you place this egg like thing under your pillow. When it's time, the egg jumps up and down, and that gets me up.

I like the bedroom to be dark and cool. I have to read on my Kindle before I can sleep. It's such a habit, that often I make it through one page before I'm asleep. This is a lot better than thinking myself awake. The pillows have to be very comfortable and the blankets straight and warm. The dog likes to sleep with me (he divides his time among everyone who is sleeping here -- just my daughter and me now). With me, he is a late sleeper, which I like. With my daughter, he gets right up and wants to go out at 8 a.m. when she says "good morning".

Napping...nothing at all, just snooze for a few minutes, an hour.
For real sleep, a nice warm fire that I can watch OR a few drops of CBD with THC mixed in. With this I get at the most 5 hours....
Get to watch some great sun rises...

I used to have a lot of trouble sleeping, falling and staying. I found that I had a magnesium deficiency and that most people do.
I started taking ionic magnesium (2 droppers) every night. O.k., I also take herbal tinctures such as passionflower, California poppy,
Ghost pipe (monotropa uniflora), willow bark, valerian, ionic zinc, goldenrod, elderberry, lion's mane, watercress, nettle, and a couple others. Wild Lettuce at times. Magnesium is vital for over 300 bodily processes and one is relaxation. The ionic does not disturb my digestive system. I consider these so much better than using CBD or pharmaceuticals. In fact, I have been able to stop or reduce meds significantly. I can regulate my sleep at will. I can sleep a couple hours wake up and do things and then go right back to sleep. If I want to stay asleep for 6 to 8 hours, I just do it with no trouble. I recommend you check with a medical professional before taking herbs though. Some herbs may interfere with meds you are taking or just may not be for you. I researched mine and made sure that none of them have any contraindications. I also take a lot of various vitamins and have more energy than I know what to do with.

As a several decades outdoor enthusiast have learned to sleep in many places besides my residence. Heck I was in the military. But if we're just talking home...

Sans bed, sleep on an old mattress or downstairs couch. Mid winter overnight dipped to 32F outside at dawn last week and 56F indoors as frugally turned gas heat off years ago. During day electric space heaters will raise into low 60Fs so sleeping at moderately cool temperatures. Live in a loud street traffic retail residential urban zone. Sound can bother me more than it seems to bother others. Thus always have a pair of foam cylinder ear plugs available if that seems to be annoying my attempt to calm. Worst sound is someone snoring strongly. Generally a light sleeper with a highly developed sense system.
Am continuously moving my body position whenever I wake up. Often rotating this side, back, other side. In my aging body, I find several reasons to keep my head generally more elevated than the rest if my body. Am good curling up against things. Must have some puppy DNA. Less blood pressure in brain over long hours, less sinus pressure. Because I'm such a small light Caucasian male, there is less pressure on my skin receptors laying against whatever. While backpacking little me though I don't prefer such, is skilled at sleeping atop uneven sort of bumpy surfaces.

During my recent months with little pressure on my time, I seem to prefer deciding to sleep in the evening when I get a sort of drowsy feeling at beddytime. :)

A fair number of infrequent campers have more trouble trying to sleep in an outdoors tent versus a strange motel. And many more backpackers on their first night out on a trip have insomnia since can be all so overpoweringly different, especially in the High Sierra.

Ok. Here's the weird thing about mr Dave. All my life, every moment I am asleep, I am also dreaming. Thus no periods of non-dreaming. I always wake up while dreaming. Even if I just start nodding off while typing on the computer late in the evening and in a second or two catch myself from leaning over. Last week I had a short part of a dream with skiing that was just awesomely enjoyable.

Need a cool, dark, quiet room with the perfect pillow and comfortable bed. I also take melatonin, eat a lot of walnuts, and also frozen cherries (or fresh) - these all contribute melatonin, which diminishes with age. Getting to bed at a uniform time helps. Watching TV to fall asleep is a no-no, but listening to a radio drama (with no light) is helpful to me. I listen on an ipad with cover closed so there is no light. My favorites are the old Dragnet radio show at https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Dragnet_Singles and also Unshackled episodes found at https://unshackled.org/listen/browse-all-programs/ . Make sure that whatever you listen to shuts off after the episode ends rather than playing all night and interrupting your sleep.
