What have you bought recently?

Oh! I was looking at a pair of UGG loafers a couple of days ago and am very tempted to buy a pair, the problem is the pair I was looking at were my friend's and if I buy a pair she will think I copied her. :)
........this is my second pair of these, I completely wore the old ones out....they are the perfect 'old woman' shoes...lol ....they are comfortable and warm (lined with wool)....not really very stylish and the heel could be a tad higher but I would still would recommend.

You know, I used to think that but, they looked really nice on her teamed with jeans. Mind you, she is quite tall and I am not so, probably would look totally different on my feet - cosy though :)

I'm slowly getting rid of the "stuff" I have. The last thing I want is more "stuff." At this point I only buy what I need. Other than for Christmas when I bought myself a few food treats.

What boggles the mind is people complaining about the cost of things, heating oil, food, gas, etc., yet they continue to buy "stuff" at an alarming rate. I don't get it. I guess it's how they comfort themselves. wassat
I agree…
Yes…..heat, fuel, gas, groceries, etc have risen at an alarming rate.
But…..
The confusing part is…..the complaining of the rise of these essentials…..which we all know is becoming a struggle.
So…..
Then some peoples’ next motion is to power shop for unessentials…..shop…..shop…..shop, but, granted, we all need to do some rate of shopping.

Some money saving tips……
Turn the heat down only far enough so your water line doesn’t freeze up, and ice doesn’t form on the inside of your home, buy a whole bunch of cloths to keep warm, inside.
Go outside and build a fire…..keep warm, heat water for bathing and other chores, cook over the fire, use the light from the fire to read,
find a hot spot for free internet…..tv, sit by a neighbours and watch theirs, or go to a tv store and watch theirs.

I try to not judge people's psychological need to shop for and purchase "non-essentials."

When clearing my mother's house after she passed, I found my dad's letters to her during WWII. In several of them he mentioned that his army uniform was the first new-to-him suit he ever owned. (In 1920s & 30s NYC, suits were de regueur for weekly church services - even for young boys- so that surprised me.)

He confided his humiliation of wearing hand-me-downs in poor condition, and expressed great determination that he would never, by God, wear raggedly clothes again.

When I was growing up, my father wore suits to work and bought several good quality suits every year to keep his wardrobe fresh. No darned socks for him - if they got a hole, out they went, ditto shirts with stains, or frays.

He had dozens of dress shirts and ties, several pairs of wing tip type shoes, and plenty of casual clothing. He drove beautiful cars and kept himself and his personal possessions in immaculate condition. When styles changed, he moved forward. He had a far more extensive wardrobe than most men of his era and thought nothing of purchasing more.

I knew his family had a much rougher go of it during the Depression than my Mom's (whose father had a steady job), but other than amusing anecdotes Dad didn't talk about it much.

Reading his letters helped me connect the dots from the painful, lifelong effect of his family's financial struggles during his formative years to his greater-than-most-need for new clothing, cars, "stuff", and deep pantries and freezers full of food. Am guessing his wasn't a rare story.

By the grace of God, he was a very good financial provider. We had more than enough money to cover all needs and most wants, so shopping for new stuff has always been far more of a chore than a thrill for me, but his letters clearly showed me why that wasn't true for him - and probably for a whole lot of people.

I totally understand the meaning of your post. THANK YOU, StarSong.

I have a similar pair of Vans but, if you haven't worn them before, you might need to soften the backs. Make sure you wear socks the first time - I got a blister :(

Mine have a thicker sole and might be a little higher at the back.

I’ve had several things that haven’t worked out well for me, usually because of vision problems and also rushing to not be in stores too long.

Costco Havarti cheese was on special. Instead of being creamy, it was tough. Lactose free. I’ve never seen that before. No way am I standing in line to return it. I actually think I’ll throw it away, which is making me feel guilty.

Searching for cornmeal, DH and I both examined a package that looked like it had muffins on it. They were for something else. That’ll be donated.

Face cream. I liked it when I used the tester in the store. Later saw that it ‘plumps’, which isn’t a feature I want.

A nasal spray. When I opened the package, saw the contraindications made it unusable for me.

I’ve also missed the BB dates on some items. Too short and some things that I’m not willing to test the theory.

There are actually YouTube videos

How To Break In Vans (FREE, Fast, Painless Methods) - YouTube

The ones on the video are more like mine and you can see that the back is quite thick. I dampened the backs of mine and just pushed the backs forwards and backwards a few times to soften them. I think it is just when they are brand new the backs are stiff, mine are very comfortable now. Yours look lower at the back so may be fine from the off. (y)
They do seem ok. Not had VANS for a long time. I got my first pair about 25 years ago from a big Mall in Los Angeles when the only place you saw them here in the UK was on MTV :)

That's good. The backs of yours look low. I changed the video link because I hadn't seen her second tip when I posted it!:)

Battery jumper for my vehicles..Truck,car.tractors,mower etc...Used Amazon gift cards from Xmas.. (y)

Is is one the compact ones, I purchased a NOCO product about a year ago and it has come in so handy. I always carry jumper cables but this little charger has been one the best things I have purchased. I have used it many times, did not have to ask for help if the car won't start. Every single lady should have one of these in their car!!

Same concept, different brand name..

I finally did it. I spent some money. Kitty litter and catnip.

Used up the last of the $$ available on my healthy foods card from Kaiser. It's only $150 per quarter to begin with and won't be reloaded until April 1! I frittered it away on a 12-pack of Ensure. Geez. even that stuff has gone up. Used to be about $25 for a 12-pack; now it's $30 and change.

Hmmm... wonder how one qualifies for that. I have Kaiser and don't get a "healthy foods" card.

Maybe they don't care what I eat...
I dunno. I'm in Georgia. My brother in Michigan has a different carrier and gets one, too. His is for $90/month. 2022 was the first time I got it and wondered if it was because I was considered "low income" or something and thought maybe this year I wouldn't get it because my income from Kroger definitely puts me way beyond low income. OTOH, even with SS and teeny tiny pension, I wasn't really low income.

With this year's big bump in SS, I'm for sure not even close to low income.

🤷‍♀️

Might it have something to do with Senior Advantage rather than just the regular senior policy? I have Senior Advantage. My brother also has Senior Advantage, and he's definitely low income.

I also have Senior Advantage. Looked it up on Kaiser. Apparently they provide it to those who have one or more "qualifying chronic conditions." Not sure what those might be (diabetes, high BP, etc.,???), but I don't have any serious ongoing heath issues.

@StarSong I don't know what my qualifying chronic condition is, either. I do take meds for HBP and one that I thought was for cholesterol, but when I looked it up, it was described as being for congestive heart failure. If I have that, nobody told me.

Let's keep a good thought that the meds you use for cholesterol control are also prescribed for CHF, and that Kaiser automatically enrolls anyone taking that medication in the healthy foods program. 🤞
