What Have You Seen Out Your Window?

Last night I was having a smoke with my head out my back window and I am 2 floors up and all of a sudden I saw this rather large animal walking on the wire not far from the window. I got a little scared because I've never seen anything that big walking there. It climbed onto the wall of the roof that is outside my window and when I saw what it was I quickly closed the window. It was a big giant raccoon! It just reminds me that there are all kinds of animals walking around the city. When I was little I picked up a raccoon and got all scratched up so I was rather scared of it.

So what have you seen out your window?

Of late, we've had coyotes (rather common for us) come up close
But
I 'saw' the hind end of a small black bear lumber off after waking me from rattling our garbage cans
This was at 3AM, so it was all I could mentally muster to get a flashlight and 357 in my hand
Next time will be my camera

We've had some raccoons in the past caught one in our garage, he was breaking into the dry dog food we had there. He climbed up the wall and took a leak downward at us, hit my husband, he was closest. We opened the door wide to let him back out. Since then our dogs have pretty much kept them off our property, don't see as many as we used to. People used to leave dry food in their front and back yards for their cats and dogs, not a good idea, I feed my pets inside.

Many times I'll see a deer or coyote through my back windows, they come right up to the fence. Occasionally a fox, grouse or hawk. Very often we have squirrels and rabbits romping in our yard.

You can't go dancing with a raccoon.

There have been reports of a coyote wandering around in our senior complex. I have never seen one here in Florida, but they were all over in Arizona. Saw a few roadrunners out there too.

There are coyotes in my neighborhood but I haven't seen one...yet. Never saw a bear either! I think they are further north of here in Canada.

It's hard to see out the windows at night here, and nothing unusual comes around in the day. But I've had possums, raccoons, and bats on the front porch at night. It is screened in now, but last Christmas a raccoon came in through the cat door, and I found tracks up the wall, almost to the ceiling. They look for openings, like just under the eaves of houses, to get inside.

Normally I look out the window and see squirrels, rabbits, people walking dogs, etc...

A couple of years ago I was up in the wee hours of the morning, I looked out the window and saw one of our young graduate students and her male friend sneaking into the building stark naked!

We all need to have a secret or two but I would love to know the story behind that adventure!!!

I've seen deer, squirrels, coyote, and the scariest of all, 3 bears eating in my front yard and they were not small bears. These 3 came around about 2 or 3 times and would just eat the acorns, etc. in my yard.

Mostly I see deer in my yard, but also raccoons and brightly coloured male pheasants.
All summer there were little brown birds in the spruce trees but they disappeared when the weather turned cold.
Many people walk by with their dogs, in early morning and again in the late afternoon.
Dogs need to get their exercise.

Cows, & more Cows. Red tail hawks, Crows, squirrels, geese, groundhogs and deer, mostly. We have had a Great Horned Owl and a beautiful Scarlet Tanager pass through. We see the dairy farmers working in the fields and driving their many mechanical "work horses"by. ....and of course traffic.

Out on our front porch recently there was a large skunk!! Out on the back patio there was a opossum!!

Plus during the day we have 3 Roadrunners that come around..

We have skunks here, too, and when the window is open I can smell them even if I can't see them. Hahaha.

I've seen a possum once many years ago.

I like those pictures!

Lots and lots of now white rabbits, I see deer everyday in a large natural area I live by, and once in a while coyotes. Some people have been feeding the coyotes, so now because of the feeding, they have become quite a problem.

My guess is it was a neighbor (a renter, I found out)who didn't want him anymore. I called the county animal control but said they don't deal with Iguanas, haha. I ran across the street for a neighbor who works for a wildlife place that rescues animals. She came over in her dress and pulled him down from a tree he started to climb. No one claimed him so she took him to the animals rescue place where he lives now. It was quite an experience!

I live in a quiet subdivision and I only see people walking their dogs or jogging. There is one cat that roams the neighborhood just to annoy the dogs.

Every house it passes the dogs start barking and Pickles is no exception...this cat make the hair on his back stand!

Actually this cat kind of freaked me out the first time I came across it when I was walking....I turned around to see this huge cat with the longest legs Ive ever seen on a cat...thankfully I was near my house and decided to go home instead of continuing my walk...Scary cat! :)

Since our neighborhood outdoor cat has been adopted, and made indoor, the ground squirrels are back in force, tunneling near the foundation of the house. Causes wet basement in heavy rains.

What a coincidence, Ruthanne!

We've lived in the High Desert for 19 years, and we see many Coyotes, some who have their dens in vacant fields in our neighborhood, also Jackrabbits,
Kit Foxes, Kangaroo Rats, (one was eating popcorn inside the popcorn bag my wife was holding while at a Star Party), Ground Squirrels, an occasional Bobcat, and even a Mountain Lion, which are captured by Animal Control and taken back to their mountain habitat.

My wife leaves dry cat food and water in bowls on our front porch for stray cats, and the other night she turned on the porch light to see if any stray cats were visiiting, and then she called me over to the front door and I saw a large Raccoon!

It was taking food from the bowl with its HANDS!( It doesn't have paws as such, but actual hands with 5 fingers!) When I rattled the front door knob it looked right at me, turned and slowly ambled away, unlike the cats which will quickly dart away. it returned shortly thereafter and continued eating the cat food.

What puzzled me is these are not High Desert creatures, so this one must have wandered away from Spring Valley Lake, a resort community about 4 miles away.

I became so interested in Raccoons that I visited YouTube and watched several educational videos of raccoons, and others with 'coons interacting with people and their pets. Check it out...it's really interesting! I even learned that when there's water nearby, they will WASH their food before eating it!
