What is going on in the Dominican Republic?

This has been going on far too long, imo.

Nine American tourists have died in the Dominican Republic since the summer of 2018. Dozens of others have reported falling ill quickly and mysteriously, leading to trips being cut short and, in some cases, hospital stays.

The bottom line: Officials in the Dominican Republican or the US have not said the deaths are connected.
But there are similarities between the deaths. Three of the Americans died at the Bahia Principe resort in La Romana within days of each other. Two died at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana.

A large group of Jimmy Buffett fans went to the DR a few months ago. About half of the group fell ill, after drinks in their hotel. I think someone was tuning up the deadly mix that would eventually kill folks in the near future.

For me, personally, overseas travel is in my past. There's still plenty to see in the US.

I believe terrorists are finding new ways to kill US Citizens, abroad. I haven't heard anything, in the last week, about the couple who died in Fiji. That's very fishy, to me.

I doubt if it was ever ''safe'' or will ever be ''safe'', eating, drinking, socializing, out and about at your own risk. They need to determine the cause of deaths or tourism will be hurt. Probably safer than vacationing in Detroit.

I heard something about suspicious herbicides on the grounds of that hotel being looked into, but nothing else.

I too wonder if this is just Americans...I haven't found any body else.

Officials have gone down there but don't know what it could be. IMO, the place should be swarming with FBI, the WHO, teams from major medical universities and scientists, investigating and testing relentlessly.

And yes, test the booze in every bottle!

One of the recent reports said that one of those who died had some "green ooze" dripping from his mouth. That would seem to indicate that he had ingested something rather toxic. Personally, if I were to visit any other nations, it would be Canada, or the European nations. We went on a Caribbean cruise a few years ago...the Bahama's, etc., and I was a bit concerned about how some of the people on those island nations had to live. Sanitation, and food preparation, etc., seemed minimal, at best. With all the drug gang activity increasing in many of the "Latino" nations in recent years, I have No desire to travel South.

When the first deaths were reported, they said it was a new strain of the flu. Yeah...whenever doctors can't figure something out, it's always the flu

I have been following some of this news, but they (the medical people reporting this story) aren't giving out a lot of details. It's like every time something happens on one of these small islands, no one knows anything for certain. If and/or when the latest man who died is sent back here to the U.S. it is likely that an autopsy will be performed and definitely a toxicology screening, as well. Some think this has been a coincidence, while others believe it to be some type of bacteria, maybe from pool water. I know that if pools aren't checked daily that many different bacterial infections have been found in several different resorts. It's something that we take for granted when we go swimming at the Holiday Inn (as an example), but it doesn't hurt to ask the manager when the last time was that the pool water was checked for toxicity.

When we were in Las Vegas a few years back, the pool at the Hard Rock was shut down due to some type of bacteria. That's a mess when this happens. The pool has to be drained, scrubbed with an anti-bacterial agent and then checked daily for so many days.

It's interesting that the bacteria involved seems to be able to distinguish the difference between Americans and people from the Dominican Republic or tourists from other countries.

I'm starting to lean towards the idea that the media is weaving together legitimate facts from a variety of tragic events to create a made for television mystery.

It will be interesting to see what the various investigators come up with as a common cause.

Could be suspicious, or it really could be from natural causes. There could be a strain of bacteria that is located in a hotel or restaurant that is mainly frequented by Americans.

Another American died yesterday-

GLEN COVE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A former Long Island pizzeria owner is now the ninth American tourist to die while vacationing in the Dominican Republic this year.

The 56-year-old man was celebrating his retirement when loved ones say he suddenly fell ill and died. On Sunday, there were many unanswered questions about what happened to him during his trip to the island, CBS2’s Christina Fan reported.

(Other reports say he is the 10th)

I don't think this is ethnicity based. More nationality than anything. Heard someone say that some Dominicans don't like Haitians either.

Same as Haiti. Been to both places. Been there: Done that. No point in returning. Once is enough. Saw a poor horse; You could count every bone in it's body. Better let the poor thing run free !

Hate to sound like a paranoid but after learning about the brain issues some Americans are sufferung still from the building interiors of the embassies in Russia and Cuba I smell a rat. Like a KGB rat. Could they be experimenting with a new type or method of poison and why don't we know the cause yet? Recall the poison wiped on the guy's neck from South Korea? I put nothing past Russia.

Last I heard it was 11 people, probably more since then. I've read articles about people who went there prior to the deaths and got sick but didn't realize the magnitude of it. As far as I'm concerned the "official" explanations for these deaths just don't cut it. The U.S. agencies (State Department, CDC, whatever else) need to stay on top of this and yes...people need to stop going there. Hopefully those who booked trips already (before this news broke) can get their money back.
