To help your meditations here's today's puzzler. It's made of metal, but that's all I'm going to tell you ...

Michael, I think you are on the right track ! That thing kept looking familiar to me, but I couldn't quote place why. But I can see that being part of the girth straps on an English saddle, or maybe even part of a harness, and a snap hooks into the other end with some sort of a strap probably.

Is it some form of brake latch for stopping a cog wheel on a machine ?

Cool idea - sort of like a quick-release key chain! Unfortunately it isn't that.
