What is the appeal of 'Whiskey'

"What is the appeal of 'Whiskey'"

The appeal is that I like it! 😊 Favorites include Appleton Estate Rum, Makers Mark Bourbon, and The Macallan on the rocks with a splash of spring water. One will do it, thank you! 🥃Once in a while, I also enjoy a dirty martini. 🍸

I have had a few whiskeys I've enjoyed. One was Suntory's Hibiki brand, the Hibiki 12. It's no longer made but is a lovely introduction to Scotch. It's light, smooth, with a touch of sweetness and the barest hint of smoke. One whisky critic in a Washington Post article compared the Japanese whiskeys to a Lexus – "smooth, consistent, and always pleasant."

My preference is bourbon, neat. My first introduction was Pappy Van Winkle's 20 yr old Reserve, from the old Stitzel-Weller/Canada reserves. GLORIOUS! This was before bourbon became the "in" thing, and for several years I could easily buy it for $100/bottle.

Now, of course, you can't touch it, or any of the van Winkle bourbons; nor Weller, for that matter, unless you're willing to pay close to the $1K mark. If I'd only bought myself a couple of bottles of Pappy back then......[sigh]

In its place I have two of the 10-yr old Jefferson 100% ryes. They have a lighter body but the same caramelized sweetness one finds in bourbons. I have 1/2 bottle left of the older 2010 Reserve Very Small Batch (91.4% proof; no longer made) that is a true delight, with the super-long, warm soft finish reminiscent of Pappy's.

When I went to buy more a few years later, I found they had dropped it and so instead I bought the Presidential Collection 2014(?) 10-year, 94% proof. Because of the additional aging Jeffersons do not have that typical rye bitterness, nor the heat of high-alcohol whiskeys. They are strictly sipping whiskeys!

I am slowly getting into rums - I'd gotten as far as Mt. Gay. But I lucked out when a friend visited Cuba during the brief time Obama lifted the embargo. I told him to visit the original Bacardi distillery and buy the best rum they had. When he returned he gave me the Havana 7-yr old rum.

When Castro took over Cuba, Bacardi abandoned the distillery (moving production elsewhere to Puerto Rico, and their HQ to Bermuda). The Cubans continued to produce rum, mostly for export, renaming it Havana brand. This was the first and ONLY chance to try a rum from the original distillery.

It is amazing; dark, rich, and smooth as silk. Totally unlike Bacardi US current rums, and it puts them to shame.

The thing that kills me? My friend wouldn't take any money beforehand, and didn't buy the 15-yr old Havana. He thought the 7-yr old at $15 was costly enough! I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd just bought a Ron Zacapa 23-yr old solera rum for 3-figures. But yeah, I wanted to kick him when he said the 15-yr old Havana was $23! (I had been trying to give him $75 before he left).

The reviews for the appeal of whiskey is encouraging me to try a shot again soon. After all, I haven't been near whiskey in decades now. My nose might tell me it's worth another shot, pun intended.;)

oh that Southern Comfort brings back some memories and some black outs......I guess I really don't recall except someone had to help me home. None of that anymore for me.

Mmmmmm Whisky! Love the stuff but it has to be good stuff. Mainly Whisky for me (that's Scottish) but quite like a Whiskey (Irish) if it's a good one. I don't have much experience with Bourbon. I had a bottle of Welsh stuff recently and if I ever need to clean up some brass buttons I may get another :sneaky:

I tend to gravitate towards the smoky Islay Whiskies like Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich etc. But do like other areas too. Faves include Glendronach, Glenfarclas and anCnoc.

I have a few very nice ones coming for my birthday and Christmas aka Birthmas very soon :)
A man after my own heart. I don't care for whiskey and loathe Bourbon, but living where I do, I've got plenty of choice when it comes to single malts. My nearest distilleries are Glen Deveron and Glen Garioch (pronounced Geary), but my favourites are "The Glenlivit 18 yo" , Lagavulin 16 yo, Glenfarclas 105 and my latest 'favourite', Ailsa Bay Sweet smoke from Girvan.

The only whiskey I ever liked was Scotch. Don't drink any at all today.

I do drink what I call a Nutty Irishman; fill a 10 oz. whiskey glass with ice.
Pour enough Bailey's Irish Cream over ice to almost fill glass,

add a dash of Frangelica, then over the back of an ice tea spoon, float Godiva chocolate liqueur gently across the top of the drink.

Great after dinner drink. Tastes like a baby malted.

That was me just a few years ago. I hadn't had an alcoholic drink in years, but my high-school friends came and we all went out together for Mexican food and drinks. While we were laughing and talking I forgot that I had a wobbly leg and also forgot that I wasn't as young as our memories, so when I stood up fast in the restaurant I fell straight out on the floor, face down. Oops.

My drink was always a little bit of whiskey in a tall coke along with four or five cigarettes so it didn't matter what brand of whiskey.

Mmmmm Glenfarclas 105 is a cracker. I have a cask strength Glenlivit Nadura coming at Christmas :)

None whatsoever. It's disgusting. I had Scotch one time and it burned all the way down. I got a bottle of some kind of American whiskey, for Christmas from a place where I worked. I had one or two small cups of it, and hated it. After a year or so, I tossed it in the garbage.

The alcohol content is the main attraction, the taste is acquired. I prefer Cutty Sark Scotch nowadays, IMO smoother than the common whiskeys and bourbons.
I like Single malt Scotch whisky. See my avatar :)
I was a Johnnie Walker Black man for many, many years then in about mid 2016 the fella at the liquor store sweet talked me into trying a sherry finished scotch and I'm glad he did.

I tried Glenmorangie LaSanta and Dalmore 12 single malts and prefer Dalmore 12......if you're a scotch drinker give them a try.

I have tried many different single malts, and I favor ones finished in sherry casks. My now favorite is Balvenie Port wood, but at over $250/bottle, I cannot afford it.
